Standard Fit
Balanced proportions with layering in mind.

Relaxed Fit
Extra space for comfort and layering.
Best for: Cold-weather wear or broader builds. Ideal for heavy layering and generous movement.

Athletic Fit
Wide shoulders, contoured body.
Best for: Athletically built frames requiring more shoulder width without a baggy waist or hem.
Men’s Outerwear Fit Guide
How a Men’s Coat Should Fit
A coat is the first thing people see and the piece that has to work hardest, over a shirt one day and a suit or heavy knit the next. That makes fit a balancing act: sharp enough to look tailored, roomy enough to layer without pulling. A coat made to your measurements settles that for good. You choose the length and the fit, we cut the shoulders, chest, and sleeve to your body with the right room to layer, and a free test garment confirms it on you before your final cloth is cut.
Outerwear is the most enduring thing in most wardrobes, worn daily through a whole season and returned to winter after winter. Built to your frame in quality cloth, a good coat is something you own and love for years, not a purchase you second-guess. This guide covers the fits, the lengths, and the points to check so yours is right from the first wear.
Step One
Choose your fit
You also choose the length, from a hip-length car coat to a mid-thigh topcoat or a full overcoat below the knee, and we cut it to your height so the proportions are right.
Step Two
The fit checkpoints
Every coat is made to your measurements with no standard sizing, in the fit and length you choose, with the room to layer built in. A free test garment confirms the shoulders, chest, sleeve, and length on your body before your final cloth is cut, and it is yours to keep.

Perfect coat for a formalI needed a coat for a formal I’m attending in a few months, and I always liked the style of the twelfth Doctor, and knew I wanted something like what he wears. I loved the look of this coat but wasn’t keen on the blue lining, and Baron interested me with their brilliant customisation options. I choose a black outside colour but a maroon lining, and I could not be happier. It fits perfectly, I was worried it would be too small to wear with a hoodie underneath like the Doctor does, but it somehow feels like it fits perfectly regardless of whether there’s a hoodie underneath or not. The maroon lining is great, in darker lighting it isn’t noticeable but if it’s bright it adds a lot of subtle flair. The velvet is high quality too, it feels great and very soft, and the coat as a whole is the perfect thickness, not too heavy to the point where it’s always hot but not so thin that it doesn’t do its job. The process of getting the coat was around 2 months from initial ordering to receiving the final product, as they will send you a test coat after a month to be sure the sizing is all good, but the wait is definitely worth it for a very high quality product that I’ll be wearing out and about in my day to day life as it looks so good.

A pleasure to work withA pleasure to work with to get a fantastic coat!
I chose Baron to make my new coat for a number of reasons:
1) they have a large number of customizable options. I actually wanted to create a unique coat loosely based on the 12th Doctor design that could be more than just a prop or cosplay coat, but that I could count on to accurately replicate the onscreen coat where I wanted it to. The online platform’s many selections and Raj’s willingness to take customization requests was perfect for this!
2) the price point was better than that of others.
3) the process involved Baron making a “throwaway” trial coat to the provided specs which they send you first to check that everything fits right before they create the final coat. This takes a few weeks but as I found out, their communication is wonderful (and prompt!) and I really appreciate this extra step when creating a coat when the tailor can’t actually be physically present. Many kinks can be sorted out at this stage and were sorted from my initial measurements.
Raj’s customer service was exemplary, he was patient and communicative, and willing to do what it took to get the coat just right. We did have a little hiccup in which an early detail about outside colour was missed that resulted in (eventually) me getting two different coats at a discount. However, it was resolved very satisfactorily and now I have two fantastic and unique frock coats – one black and one burgundy – that I’ve worn to “fancy dress” occasions for the past month.
I work for a performing arts company and these were fantastic coats to wear on show dates as I had to interact with our patrons, board members, and donors. I’ve received many compliments daily on my coats over the course of our recent extended run of shows, and when I wear the coats out to personal engagements.
