How to Measure Your Waistband (Waist)
Measure around your waist where you normally wear the waistband of your pants or skirts. Keep the tape level with room for one finger.
How to Measure Your Hips
Measure around the widest part of your hips and seat. Stand with your feet together for the most accurate result. Keep the tape level with room for one finger.
How to Measure Your Desired Skirt Length
Measure from your waist where you normally wear the waistband of your pants or skirts, down to your desired hem.

How to Take Your Own Measurements for a Perfect Fit
All you need is a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help with the shoulder and back measurements. Wear close-fitting clothing so the tape sits against your body, stand naturally with your weight even on both feet, and keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger. Below is every measurement we may ask for. You do not have to get each number perfect: we send a free test garment before cutting your final cloth, so the fit is confirmed on your body first.
1
Bust circumference
Stand straight with your arms relaxed and wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, keeping it level and snug with room for one finger.
2
Natural waist
Measure around the narrowest part of your waist, usually just above the belly button, keeping the tape level with room for one finger.
3
Waist (trouser or skirt)
Measure around the area where you normally wear your trousers or skirts, keeping the tape level with room for one finger.
4
Hips and seat
Stand with your feet together and measure around the widest part of your hips and seat, keeping the tape level.
5
Thigh circumference
Measure around the fullest part of your upper thigh, keeping the tape snug with room for one finger.
6
Front rise
Sit down and measure from your natural waist at the front, down between your legs to the seat, to capture the rise for trousers.
7
Inseam
Measure from the highest point of the crotch down the inside of your leg to the same hem point used for the trouser length measurement.
8
Outseam and trouser length
Measure from the top of your waistband down the outside of your leg to the point where you want the trouser hem to finish.
9
Shoulder width
Measure across your back from the edge of one shoulder to the edge of the other, keeping the tape flat.
10
Sleeve or arm length
Measure from the edge of your shoulder, along the outside of your relaxed arm, to your desired sleeve length.
11
Bicep (upper arm)
With your muscles relaxed, measure around the fullest part of your upper arm, keeping the tape snug with room for one finger.
12
Neck circumference
Measure around the base of your neck where a collar would sit, keeping the tape level with room for one finger.
13
Jacket or back length
Measure from the base of your neck down the center back to where you want the jacket to end.
14
Dress or skirt length
Measure from your natural waist for a skirt, or from the shoulder for a dress, down to your desired hem.
Every garment is made to your measurements with no standard sizing, and a free test garment confirms the fit on your body before we cut your final cloth. Bust, waist, hips, thighs, rise, inseam, shoulders, sleeve, and length, all cut to you.
Questions & Answers
Frequently asked questions about measuring yourself
How do I measure my bust, waist and length for a custom garment?
Use a flexible tape. For the bust, wrap it around the fullest part with the tape level. For the waist, measure the narrowest part, usually just above the belly button. For length, measure from the shoulder or natural waist down to your desired hem. Keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger, and measure over close-fitting clothing rather than bulky layers.
How do I measure my waist, hips, thighs and rise?
Measure the waist at the narrowest point, the hips around the widest part of your hips and seat, and the thigh around the fullest part of the upper leg. For the rise, sit down and measure from the front of your natural waist, down between your legs to the seat. Keep the tape level and snug throughout.
Where can I get my measurements taken?
Any local tailor or seamstress can take your measurements in a few minutes, and many fabric or bridal shops offer measuring too. You can also measure yourself at home with a flexible tape using this guide, or have a friend help with the back and shoulder measurements. Because we send a free test garment before cutting your final cloth, the fit is confirmed on your body regardless of who takes the first measurements.
What do I need to measure myself?
Just a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help with the shoulder and back measurements. Wear close-fitting clothing so the tape sits against your body, and stand naturally with your weight even on both feet.
How tight should the measuring tape be?
Snug but not tight. The tape should sit flat against your body with just enough room to slip one finger underneath. Pulling it too tight gives measurements that are too small, and leaving it loose makes the garment baggy.
What if my measurements are not perfect?
That is exactly why we send a free test garment. Give us your best measurements, and we build a test version in a stand-in cloth to your numbers and ship it to you. You try it on, we adjust from there, and nothing is cut in your final fabric until the fit is confirmed.

Free test garment first
Before we cut your chosen cloth, we make a test version of your garment in cotton, cut from the same pattern, and send it to you free. You try it on and tell us what to change. Only after you approve the fit do we make the final piece. The test garment is yours to keep.
This is the full production time across two stages. Your test garment takes 3 to 4 weeks to make. Once you approve the fit, your final garment takes another 3 to 4 weeks. Shipping is tracked and comes after production.
Do skirts have pockets? Most fitted ones do not, and there is a reason: a pocket in a close skirt either gapes open at the hip or bulges the moment you put a phone in it. This one has real pockets, and they are built to lie flat. It is a knee length skirt with pockets, a pencil cut in Super 160s worsted wool made to your measurements, with two slanted front pockets finished with single welts.
The slant is the point. A pocket opening cut on an angle follows the line of the hip, so it stays closed when you stand and opens when your hand goes in; a straight side pocket on a fitted skirt pulls open every time you sit. The skirt has no waistband: the waist is finished with an inside facing for a smooth line under a tucked top. It closes with a hidden center back zipper, has a center back vent, and is fully lined in satin.
It is one of the work skirts for women that you can actually live in: a women’s business skirt with somewhere to put your phone between meetings, and a knee length work skirt that keeps its line all day. Skirts with pockets are rare in our range; this is the one we designed around them.

Free Test Skirt
Test the Pockets Before the Wool Is Cut
Before we cut your wool, we send you the skirt in cotton, made from your measurements, free and yours to keep. It is unlined; the satin you choose goes into the wool skirt.
Pockets are the hardest thing to get right on a fitted skirt, and the test skirt is where we check them. If the pocket mouths open while you stand, the hip is too snug; if the skirt pulls across the front when you sit, it needs a little more ease below the waist. Put your phone or keys in the test skirt pockets, sit down, and send us photos. Those notes go straight into your pattern.

The Pockets
A Pencil Skirt With Pockets That Lie Flat
A pencil skirt with pockets works only when three things line up: the slant of the opening, the welt that holds the edge, and enough ease over the hip that the pocket is not stretched open. Here the pocket bags sit inside the lining, so nothing shows through the wool.
What they hold
A phone, keys, a card or a lipstick; not a full wallet, which would spoil the line
Opening
Slanted, finished with a single welt so the edge stays crisp
Flat when standing
Yes, if the hip measurement is right; the test skirt confirms it
Remove them?
Yes. Ask for a plain front in the comment box on the measurement form
If you have been looking for work skirts with pockets that do not look like casual wear, this is the difference between a welt pocket and a patch pocket: a welt is cut into the skirt and finished from inside, the way pockets are made on a suit jacket, so it reads as tailoring rather than utility.
Knee Length
Knee Length Skirts for Women, and Other Lengths
Knee length skirts are the safest choice for an office, and the work skirt length we make by default: the hem sits at the middle of the knee, as in our photos. As a knee length business skirt it works under a jacket; as a black pencil skirt knee length it goes from desk to dinner with a change of top.
Knee length
Hem at the middle of the knee. Our default, and the length in the photos
Pencil skirt above the knee
Two to three fingers above the knee; keep a little more hip ease so it stays down when you sit
Skirt below the knee
Just under the kneecap; the vent is lengthened to match
What is the appropriate skirt length for work? At the knee or within a hand’s width of it, in a dark solid cloth, is accepted almost anywhere. If you prefer an above knee length skirt, or a longer one, enter the length you want on the measurement form; the test skirt shows it on you.
The Cloths
Super 160s Wool for a Skirt With Pockets
The wool is a Super 160s worsted, very fine and smooth, woven in a plain weave for wear in every season. A fine cloth matters on a skirt with pockets: it lies thin over the pocket bags, so the front stays smooth.
Black
The color in our photos; the black knee length skirt with pockets most clients order.
Navy Blue
Clear navy, softer than black in daylight.
Midnight Blue
Darker than navy; looks almost black indoors.
Dark Grey
Close to charcoal and easy with every blouse.
Steel Grey
A cool mid gray with a hint of blue.
Medium Grey
The classic suit gray.
Choose your color in the selector; light gray is also offered there. Blues and black are closer on screen than in daylight.

Questions & Answers
Questions About the Skirt With Pockets
Q. Do skirts have pockets?
A. Many fitted skirts do not, because a pocket on a close cut tends to gape or bulge. This one does: two real slanted welt pockets, built so they lie flat when the hip measurement is right.
Q. Will the pockets make my hips look wider?
A. Not when they are cut on a slant and the skirt has enough ease over the hip. Pockets look bulky when the skirt is tight and pulls them open, which is exactly what the free test skirt checks before the wool is cut.
Q. What can I carry in them?
A. A phone, keys, cards or a lipstick. Heavy or thick items such as a full wallet will spoil the line of any pencil skirt.
Q. What are some outfit ideas for styling a knee-length black skirt with pockets for both casual and professional occasions?
A. For work, a silk blouse or fine knit tucked in, with a blazer and heels; the no-waistband finish keeps the tuck smooth. For casual days, a striped tee or a crew-neck sweater, loose over the waist, with loafers or clean sneakers, hands in the pockets.
Q. What is the right work skirt length?
A. At the knee or just above or below it suits nearly every office. Our default is knee length; you can enter any length on the measurement form, from a pencil skirt above the knee to just below it.
Q. Can I have the pockets removed, or a waistband added?
A. Yes. Write it in the comment box on the measurement form, or email us with your order number, and the change goes into your pattern before the test skirt.
Q. Which knee length office skirt styles suit a formal workplace?
A. Yes. A knee-length pencil skirt in black, navy or dark gray wool, with welt pockets that sit flat, reads as tailored rather than casual and works with a matching jacket.
Q. How do I care for it?
A. Dry clean is recommended for a longer life, and a gentle cool machine wash is possible. Empty the pockets before hanging, and hang it from the waist on a clip hanger.
Q. Is the test skirt free, and how long does it take?
A. Yes, it is free, in cotton and yours to keep. Making it takes 3 to 4 weeks, and it reaches you 5 to 10 days after dispatch. Once you approve the fit, the wool skirt takes another 3 to 4 weeks and 5 to 10 days to arrive, so order as early as you can.

Women’s Skirt Fit Guide
How a Tailored Skirt Should Fit
A pencil skirt is only as good as three measurements, the waist, the hip, and the length, and off-the-rack rarely gets all three right on one body. A custom-made skirt does. You choose the length and the fit, we cut the waist and hip to your measurements, and a free test garment confirms it on you before your final cloth is cut. This guide covers the fits and where a tailored skirt should sit.
Step One
Choose your fit
Slim / Pencil
Closely follows the waist, hip, and thigh for a sharp, tailored line. The classic work-skirt silhouette, cut with a vent or split so you can still walk freely.
Standard (Classic) Fit
Skims the hip with a little more ease than a true pencil, comfortable for all-day wear while keeping a clean, tailored shape.
Relaxed / A-line
Fitted at the waist and easing gently over the hip, for more movement and a softer line that flatters most figures.
Step Two
The fit checkpoints
Waist
The waistband sits at your chosen height, snug and level, with no gap at the back when you sit. Cut to your waist, it stays put without rolling or pinching.
Hip & seat
The skirt skims the widest part of your hips and seat cleanly, with no horizontal pull lines and no riding up when you walk. This is where cutting to your hip measurement matters most.
Length
You choose it: on the knee for a classic look, just above for a sharper line, or midi for elegance. Every hem is cut to your height and proportions.
Walking room
A fitted skirt is cut with a back vent, split, or kick pleat so you can walk and climb stairs comfortably without the skirt feeling restrictive.
Every skirt is made to your measurements, in the fit and length you choose, with the waist and hip cut to you and a vent for easy walking. A free test garment confirms it before your final cloth is cut, and it is yours to keep.
Your Worries, Answered
The doubts most women have, and why you can relax
Pencil skirts always ride up or gape at my waist. Am I just hard to fit?
You are not, ready-to-wear is. Skirts are cut to one fixed waist-to-hip ratio, so if yours is different, the waist gapes or the hips pull and the skirt rides up. We cut your waist and your hip independently to your own measurements, so the skirt sits level with no gap and skims the hip without riding, and you confirm exactly that on the free test garment before the final skirt is made.
I can never walk comfortably in a fitted skirt. Will this be different?
Yes. A tailored pencil skirt is cut with a back vent, split, or kick pleat that gives you real stride room for walking and stairs, and with enough ease through the hip to sit down comfortably. When you try the free test garment, take a few steps and sit, and if you want more walking room we simply add it before the final skirt is cut.
I have never bought a skirt I could not try on first. How do I know it will fit?
Because you do try it on first. We make a free test skirt in a stand-in cloth to your measurements and post it to you. You put it on, walk, sit, and check the waist, hips, and length, then send us notes and photos. Only once you are happy do we cut your final cloth, so the finished skirt is a fit you have already approved.
I am nervous I will measure my waist or hips wrong.
You do not have to be exact. Our guide walks you through each measurement, a friend or a local tailor can help, and if you are unsure you can send your best numbers. The free test garment catches anything slightly off, we see the skirt on your body and adjust, so a first-try measurement is completely normal.
I struggle to find any skirt that flatters my shape. Is custom-made really for me?
It is made for exactly you. A small waist with fuller hips, or the reverse, a longer or shorter body, these are the shapes off-the-rack fails and custom-made tailoring fits best, because we cut to your proportions rather than a size. You also choose the length that flatters you, cut to your height, so nothing is left to chance.
What if it arrives and something is not quite right?
The final skirt is cut to the exact fit you approved on the test garment, so surprises are rare by design. If a small tweak is ever needed, the finished skirt carries seam allowances at the waist and seat so a local tailor can fine-tune it, and you can always contact us and we will help make it right.
What if my size changes later?
Your finished skirt is made with seam allowances, so a local tailor can take it in or let it out at the waist and seat within reason. And we keep your measurements on record, so ordering another skirt that fits is simple whenever you want one.
Chosen your fit? Browse women’s skirts, or message us with any questions. We build the free test garment first to confirm the fit on your body, and it is yours to keep.
