How to Take Your Own Measurements for a Perfect Fit
All you need is a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help with the shoulder and back measurements. Wear close-fitting clothing so the tape sits against your body, stand naturally with your weight even on both feet, and keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger. Below is every measurement we may ask for. You do not have to get each number perfect: we send a free test garment before cutting your final cloth, so the fit is confirmed on your body first.

Frequently asked questions about measuring yourself
How do I measure my bust, waist and length for a custom garment?
Use a flexible tape. For the bust, wrap it around the fullest part with the tape level. For the waist, measure the narrowest part, usually just above the belly button. For length, measure from the shoulder or natural waist down to your desired hem. Keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger, and measure over close-fitting clothing rather than bulky layers.
How do I measure my waist, hips, thighs and rise?
Measure the waist at the narrowest point, the hips around the widest part of your hips and seat, and the thigh around the fullest part of the upper leg. For the rise, sit down and measure from the front of your natural waist, down between your legs to the seat. Keep the tape level and snug throughout.
Where can I get my measurements taken?
Any local tailor or seamstress can take your measurements in a few minutes, and many fabric or bridal shops offer measuring too. You can also measure yourself at home with a flexible tape using this guide, or have a friend help with the back and shoulder measurements. Because we send a free test garment before cutting your final cloth, the fit is confirmed on your body regardless of who takes the first measurements.
What do I need to measure myself?
Just a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help with the shoulder and back measurements. Wear close-fitting clothing so the tape sits against your body, and stand naturally with your weight even on both feet.
How tight should the measuring tape be?
Snug but not tight. The tape should sit flat against your body with just enough room to slip one finger underneath. Pulling it too tight gives measurements that are too small, and leaving it loose makes the garment baggy.
What if my measurements are not perfect?
That is exactly why we send a free test garment. Give us your best measurements, and we build a test version in a stand-in cloth to your numbers and ship it to you. You try it on, we adjust from there, and nothing is cut in your final fabric until the fit is confirmed.

Before we cut your chosen cloth, we make a test version of your garment in cotton, cut from the same pattern, and send it to you free. You try it on and tell us what to change. Only after you approve the fit do we make the final piece. The test garment is yours to keep.
This is the full production time across two stages. Your test garment takes 3 to 4 weeks to make. Once you approve the fit, your final garment takes another 3 to 4 weeks. Shipping is tracked and comes after production.

Questions About the Women’s Oversized Wool Cashmere Coat
Q. What is a dropped shoulder coat?
A. A coat whose shoulder seam sits below the shoulder point, on the upper arm. It gives a relaxed line and leaves room for knitwear underneath, so a thick sweater is never squeezed at the shoulders.
Q. How oversized is it, and how do I avoid it swamping me?
A. As oversized as you want. The seam should end before the upper bicep; if it slides much further down the arm, the coat looks borrowed rather than designed. The amount of room, the shoulder drop and the sleeve length are all set on you in the test coat.
Q. Can it be a long oversized coat?
A. Yes. It is mid-thigh as standard; enter a longer length on the measurement form, for example to the knee or the calf, for a long oversized coat over dresses.
Q. Does it close?
A. It has an open front with no buttons, worn open or held closed like a wrap. A button or a tie belt can be requested in the comment box of the measurement form, or by email with your order number.
Q. Is it warm without a lining?
A. Yes for cool weather, because the wool and cashmere is about 14 oz. It is unlined so the cloth drapes and moves; for winter use, ask for a lining in the comment box.
Q. Why 3/4 sleeves?
A. They leave room for a full sleeve underneath and show a watch, bracelets or long gloves. Full-length sleeves can be requested if you prefer.
Q. What colors does it come in?
A. Camel as photographed, and shades such as black, navy and coffee brown in the selector. Camel shows the drape of an unstructured coat most clearly, while black and navy are easier to keep clean.
Q. Is it the same cloth as your tailored wool cashmere coats?
A. Yes, the same 95% wool, 5% cashmere. Here it is left unstructured, with no canvas or padding, so it falls softly instead of holding a tailored shape.
Q. How do I measure for an oversized coat?
A. Measure as for any coat: bust, natural waist, hips and a coat you like. Tell us how much room you want, or send a photo of an oversized coat whose proportions you like, and we set the ease from there.
Q. Can I see the wool and cashmere first?
A. Yes. Our swatch service sends up to four samples of about 2 by 4 inches. They usually arrive within 4 to 6 business days. Quote product number 3400003 and the colors you want to compare; the courier fee is credited toward your first order.
Q. How long will the oversized coat take?
A. We make the cotton test coat in 3 to 4 weeks, and it arrives 5 to 10 days after dispatch. The wool cashmere coat then takes 3 to 4 weeks and arrives 5 to 10 days after it ships.
Q. How do I care for it?
A. Dry clean only, and not often. Hang it on a wide hanger so the dropped shoulders keep their shape.

The doubts most women have, and why you can relax
I am worried a custom-made coat will be too tight over my jumpers.
This is the most common coat worry, and it is exactly what we plan for. A coat is cut with more ease than a jacket precisely so it closes comfortably over your layers, and when you try the free test garment we ask you to put it on over the jumper or blazer you would normally wear underneath. If it feels at all snug, we add room before the final cloth is cut, so the finished coat is never tight over your usual layers.
A coat is a big spend. What if it arrives and it is wrong?
Nothing final, and nothing costly, is cut until you have approved the fit on the free test garment. You are not gambling a large sum on a coat you have never seen on your body; you are confirming the fit on a test version first, over your layers, and only then do we cut the real cloth. That is the whole point of the process, to take the risk out of the biggest, most visible piece in your wardrobe.
I have never been able to find a coat that fits my shoulders and my shape at once.

You do not need to get it perfect. Our guide takes you through each measurement, a friend or a local tailor can help, and you measure over light clothing so we can allow for layers ourselves. The free test garment is there to catch anything that is slightly off, we see the coat on your body and adjust, so a first-try measurement is completely fine.
How do I choose the right length without seeing it on?
Tell us the look you want, cropped, mid-thigh, knee, or full-length, and we draft it to your height so the proportion suits your frame. If you are unsure, a length that ends around the mid-thigh or knee flatters most people. The test garment then lets you see the length on your body and change it before the final coat is cut, so you are never guessing.
Will a fitted coat still look shaped, or will it end up boxy to fit the layers?
It stays shaped. We build in enough room for layers while still cutting a waist and a clean line, so the coat reads as tailored, not as a box. You choose how close or relaxed you want it, and the test garment lets you confirm that balance of room and shape on your own body.
What if my size changes, or I want to wear it over heavier layers in future?
Coats carry generous seam allowances, so a local tailor can adjust the body within reason if your shape changes. And because we cut with layering in mind and keep your measurements on record, you can tell us up front if you plan to wear it over heavy knits, and we allow for it.
The whole custom process feels intimidating. What actually happens?
It is simpler than it sounds. You choose the coat, cloth, and length and send your measurements; we make a free test garment and post it to you; you try it on over your layers and send notes and photos; we adjust and then cut and hand-tailor your final coat; and it ships to you with tracking. At no point are you committing to a finished coat you have not already seen fit on your body.
