Cashmere Wraps, Hand-Knitted and Then Felted

Two crafts in one piece. Each wrap is hand-knitted from Grade A Himalayan cashmere, deliberately larger than its finished size, then worked by hand with warm water and pressure until the stitches close. What comes out behaves like a good coating cloth — it holds a shape rather than draping — which is the same reason we reach for melton in a winter overcoat. No loom, no machinery, and no way to repeat a piece exactly.

    Knitted, Then Felted

    These Are Made Twice

    Every other piece in this collection is made once — spun, then woven, and finished. These are made twice. Each wrap is first hand-knitted from Grade A Himalayan cashmere at a size deliberately larger than it will end up. Only then does the second craft begin: the knitted cloth is worked by hand with warm water, soap and pressure until the fibers lock into each other, the stitches close, and the fabric contracts into something denser and warmer than the knitting it came from.

    Nothing about this is recoverable. Fulling cannot be undone, and a piece worked too far cannot be worked back. The knitter has to judge the starting size correctly, and the felter has to judge when to stop. It is the only thing our workshop makes where two separate skills have to agree.

    A Note on the Word

    Strictly speaking, this is fulling, not felting

    Felting, properly, is something you do to loose fiber — raw cashmere worked directly into cloth without ever being spun. Fulling is what you do to fabric that already exists: knitted, crocheted or woven cloth, agitated with heat and moisture until the fibers interlock and the whole thing shrinks and densifies. The word comes from the Medieval Latin fullare, to walk on or trample, because it was once done underfoot.

    Our wraps are knitted first, so what we do to them is fulling. The entire knitwear trade calls it felting, and so do we, because that is the word everyone knows. But the distinction matters if you want to understand what you are buying — and any seller who cannot explain which of the two they do probably does neither.

    Felted or Woven

    When to choose a felted wrap, and when not to

    Choose felted for warmth without a heavy yarn
    Fulling compresses the knitted structure and locks air inside it. The result traps more warmth than the same cashmere left as open knitting, without needing a thicker, heavier yarn to get there. It is the warmer choice in real cold, and it works better over a coat than under one.

    Choose felted for a wrap that stays put
    Fulled cloth holds a shape in a way that neither knitting nor weaving does. It stays where you place it across the shoulder instead of sliding, and it keeps a fold rather than falling flat. If you want a wrap that behaves without a pin, this is the one.

    Choose handwoven for travel and packing
    A shawl spun at our finest 200/2 count folds into a coat pocket. A fulled wrap has real substance and will not. If the piece is for flights, travel, or a warm-weather evening, our handwoven collection is the better answer — and we would rather say so than sell you the heavier item.

    Choose felted if you want a genuine one-off
    How far a piece fulls depends on water temperature, working time and pressure, and it is judged by hand rather than by a timer. Surface, density and finished dimensions vary from piece to piece by a visible margin. This is the most obviously handmade thing we make, and the only category where we cannot promise two will match.

    The Craft

    From yarn to fulled cloth

    Knitted oversized, on purpose

    The wrap is hand-knitted larger than its finished dimensions, because fulling will contract it. Judging that starting size is experience, not arithmetic — it depends on the yarn, the stitch and how far the piece is meant to go.

    Worked by hand, in stages

    Warm water, soap and steady pressure, worked and checked and worked again. The microscopic scales on each cashmere fiber open with heat and moisture, catch on one another, and lock. The cloth thickens and the stitches begin to close.

    Stopped at the right moment

    This is the whole skill. Too little and it is simply a knitted wrap; too far and the cloth goes board-stiff and is finished as a piece. There is no reversing it, so the judgement has to be right the first time. Then it is rinsed, pressed and dried flat.

    Questions about felted cashmere wraps

    Q. What does felting actually do to the cashmere?
    A. Cashmere fibers are covered in microscopic scales. Under warmth, moisture and agitation those scales open, catch on each other, and lock together permanently. Applied to knitted fabric, this pulls the stitches closed and contracts the whole piece into a denser, thicker cloth. It is the same mechanism that ruins a sweater in a hot wash — the difference is that here it is done deliberately, by hand, and stopped at exactly the right point.

    Q. Is this the same as traditional wool felting?
    A. No, and the distinction is worth knowing. Traditional felting works loose fiber directly into cloth — the fiber is never spun into yarn and never knitted. Ours begins as spun cashmere yarn, is hand-knitted into fabric, and only then felted. Strictly the correct term for felting an existing fabric is fulling, from the Latin fullare, to trample, because it was once done underfoot. The knitwear trade calls both processes felting, so we do too.

    Q. Can I still see the knitting in the finished wrap?
    A. Usually, if you look closely. Fulling blurs stitch definition rather than erasing it, so the ghost of the original knit structure often remains visible in the surface, particularly at the edges. That trace is a good thing to look for — it is direct evidence the piece was knitted first and then felted, rather than being a pressed or bonded fabric pretending to be handmade.

    Q. Why don’t the edges fray or unravel?
    A. Because fulling locks the fibers to each other across the whole cloth, including at the edges. An ordinary knitted fabric will run if you cut it; a fulled one will not. That is why these wraps need no hem, no binding and no overlock stitching to hold them together — the structure holds itself, which is also why the edges can be left soft and slightly irregular.

    Q. Will it shrink further if I wash it?
    A. No, and that is the practical advantage. The piece has already been felted under controlled conditions well beyond anything domestic washing would do, so there is no further shrinkage available to it. Hand wash cool, press the water out without wringing, and dry flat. A fine woven cashmere shawl is actually the more delicate of the two.

    Q. Why does a felted wrap take longer to make than a woven one?
    A. Because it is two crafts rather than one. The piece has to be hand-knitted in full before any felting can start, and the felting is then worked and judged by hand in stages rather than run to a timer. A weaver at a loom produces cloth at a steady, predictable rate. Here there is no machine step to fall back on at either stage, and no way to speed either of them up.

    Q. Can I order two that match?
    A. Not closely, and we would rather say so before you order than after. How far a piece fulls depends on water temperature, working time and pressure, all judged by hand, so surface and finished dimensions vary more than dye-lot variation on a woven piece.
