What 14 to 16 Microns and 200/2 Yarn Mean in Your Hands
Cashmere quality comes down to four measurable things: how fine the fiber is, how long it is, how the yarn is spun, and how much cloth you get. Here is what each one means for this shawl.
14 to 16 microns
Fiber diameter is the main measure of softness. Under US labeling law, fiber sold as cashmere must average 19 microns or finer, and most merino wool falls between about 17 and 24. At 14 to 16 microns this shawl sits against bare skin without the prickle coarser wool can give.
35 to 55 mm staple
Staple length is how long each fiber is. Longer fibers have fewer loose ends to work their way out of the yarn, so the shawl sheds and pills less than short fiber cashmere.
200/2 yarn
Two very fine threads are twisted together before weaving. The twist makes the yarn stronger and smoother without making it thick, which is how a 70 gram shawl holds up to years of wear.

That is a lot of cloth for very little weight. Fine fibers trap a layer of still air, so the shawl feels warm on your shoulders yet folds smaller than a T-shirt.

How a Handwoven Cashmere Shawl Is Made, and Why It Takes 2 to 3 Weeks
A handwoven cashmere shawl is woven thread by thread on a wooden handloom, with the weaver setting the tension by hand. That slower, looser handling is what gives this shawl its soft, open texture, which a fast machine loom pulling the yarn tight does not give. It is also why handwoven cashmere costs more than machine made.

Real or Blend
How to Tell Real Cashmere From a Blend
The label is the first test: real cashmere says 100% cashmere, and anything listing wool, viscose, modal, silk or acrylic is a blend. Many shawls sold as “pashmina” are blends, so read the fiber content, not the name. If you want to check a shawl at home, these are the honest tests and what each one can and cannot prove.
Burn test
The most reliable home test. Snip one thread from the fringe and burn it over a sink. Cashmere smells like burning hair and leaves a soft ash that crumbles. Acrylic and polyester melt into a hard bead and smell of plastic. Viscose smells like burning paper.
Feel
Real cashmere feels warm in your hand within a few seconds and soft against your neck. Synthetics often feel slippery or cool.
Ring test
A fine shawl like this one can be pulled through a finger ring. It shows the cloth is fine and light, but a fine synthetic can pass too, so it does not prove fiber content on its own.
Price

How to Wash and Care for a Cashmere Shawl
Hand washing is safe for this shawl and keeps it soft. It takes about fifteen minutes.

Soak
Add a mild detergent or wool wash to cold or lukewarm water and soak the shawl for 8 to 12 minutes.

Press, never wring
Gently squeeze the water through the cloth. Do not wring, twist or stretch it.

Rinse
Rinse in cool water until clear, then press out the excess water.

Dry flat
Lay it flat on a towel away from direct sun and reshape it while damp. A steamer or a low iron takes out creases.
Between wears, hang it somewhere airy so the fiber can recover. For storage, keep it clean, dry and folded with cedar or lavender to deter moths.
An open handwoven weave can catch on rings, bracelets, hook fastenings and bag clasps. If a thread pulls, ease it back into the weave from the other side with a blunt needle. Never cut it.

Q. Will a handwoven cashmere shawl snag or pill?
A. It can snag, because a light open weave catches on rings, bracelets and hook fastenings, but it pills very little. The long staple fiber and twisted 200/2 yarn hold together well. If a thread pulls, ease it back from the other side with a blunt needle and never cut it.
Q. Is it see-through?
A. Yes, it is slightly sheer, especially held up to light, because it is an open handwoven weave in a pale color. Spread out, it looks like a light blue sheer scarf; worn folded or doubled over the shoulders it reads as a soft solid blue. Deeper colors show through less.
Q. Is a 70 gram cashmere shawl warm enough for winter?
A. It is warm for its weight, but on its own it is not a winter coat. It is right for cool evenings, flights, air conditioning and indoor events, and in winter it works well worn doubled or under a coat.
