How to Take Your Own Measurements for a Perfect Fit
All you need is a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help with the shoulder and back measurements. Wear close-fitting clothing so the tape sits against your body, stand naturally with your weight even on both feet, and keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger. Stand straight with your arms relaxed and wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, keeping it level and snug with room for one finger.

How do I measure my bust, waist and length for a custom garment?
Use a flexible tape. For the bust, wrap it around the fullest part with the tape level. For the waist, measure the narrowest part, usually just above the belly button. For length, measure from the shoulder or natural waist down to your desired hem. Keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger, and measure over close-fitting clothing rather than bulky layers.
How do I measure my waist, hips, thighs and rise?
Measure the waist at the narrowest point, the hips around the widest part of your hips and seat, and the thigh around the fullest part of the upper leg. What do I need to measure myself?

How tight should the measuring tape be?
Snug but not tight. The tape should sit flat against your body with just enough room to slip one finger underneath. Pulling it too tight gives measurements that are too small, and leaving it loose makes the garment baggy.

That is exactly why we send a free test garment. Give us your best measurements, and we build a test version in a stand-in cloth to your numbers and ship it to you. You try it on, we adjust from there, and nothing is cut in your final fabric until the fit is confirmed.

The Skirt
Women’s Black Skirt for Work, a Pencil Skirt in Fresco Wool
Most black skirts for work sold today get their comfort from stretch: ponte, crepe with elastane, pull-on waists. This one has none, and it does not need any. It is a pencil skirt cut to your measurements in Super 130s high-twist fresco wool, a crisp open-weave cloth that breathes in a warm office and shrugs off creases from a long commute. The room to walk comes from the cut and a center back vent, not from fabric that gives way and bags at the seat by Friday.
It has no waistband. The waist is finished with a facing inside, so the line runs smooth from waist to hip under a tucked blouse or a fine knit. It is fully lined in satin, closes with a hidden center back zipper, and has no pockets to break the line. Black is the color in our photos, the black skirt for work most clients start with; the same fresco comes in other colors in the selector.

Before we cut your fresco, we make a test skirt in cotton from your measurements and send it to you free. It is yours to keep. The test skirt is unlined; the satin lining you choose goes into the final skirt only.
On a skirt with no waistband, the test skirt answers two questions a tape measure cannot. Does the top edge sit where you want it, flat at the natural waist without rolling over? And does the skirt run cleanly over the hip and seat, or does it pull across the front when you sit? Clients pin, photograph and send notes; most changes are small, a little taken in at the back waist or let out over the hip.

The Cloths
Super 130s Fresco, a Work Skirt Cloth That Breathes
Fresco is a plain weave made from tightly twisted yarns, so the cloth is open, springy and crisp in the hand. That twist is what sends creases back out of the skirt after you stand up from a desk or a flight, and the open weave is why it stays comfortable when an office runs warm. It is not a stretch cloth: it holds its shape because the wool does the work, not elastane. All the colors in the selector are the same Super 130s fresco.

No Waistband
Why a Black Office Skirt Women Tuck Into Has No Waistband
A waistband adds a band of cloth, a seam and often a button at the waist. Here there is none: the skirt ends at the waist with a facing turned inside, so the top edge lies flat. That is the reason clients choose it to tuck into, where most ladies’ skirts in shops add a band. A fine knit or a silk blouse goes in without a ridge, and a belt, if you want one, sits on a clean surface.
The trade-off is honest. A skirt with no waistband has nothing to grip a blouse, and there is no grip inside; if you want a tall waistband with a grip, our midi pencil skirt has one, and a waistband can be added here on request. Fit at the waist matters more without a band, which is exactly what the test skirt checks.

Work Skirt Length: Above, At or Below the Knee
The skirt in our photos sits at the knee: a black skirt above knee level by a little when you stand, knee length when you walk. That is the length most offices read as right. There is no single answer, but a pencil cut that reaches the knee or just past it works almost everywhere, from a bank to a design studio.

How a Tailored Skirt Should Fit
A pencil skirt is only as good as three measurements, the waist, the hip, and the length, and off-the-rack rarely gets all three right on one body. A custom-made skirt does. You choose the length and the fit, we cut the waist and hip to your measurements, and a free test garment confirms it on you before your final cloth is cut. This guide covers the fits and where a tailored skirt should sit.

Slim / Pencil
Closely follows the waist, hip, and thigh for a sharp, tailored line. The classic work-skirt silhouette, cut with a vent or split so you can still walk freely.
Standard (Classic) Fit
Skims the hip with a little more ease than a true pencil, comfortable for all-day wear while keeping a clean, tailored shape.
Relaxed / A-line
Fitted at the waist and easing gently over the hip, for more movement and a softer line that flatters most figures.

Waist
The waistband sits at your chosen height, snug and level, with no gap at the back when you sit. Cut to your waist, it stays put without rolling or pinching.
Hip & seat
The skirt skims the widest part of your hips and seat cleanly, with no horizontal pull lines and no riding up when you walk. This is where cutting to your hip measurement matters most.
Length
You choose it: on the knee for a classic look, just above for a sharper line, or midi for elegance. Every hem is cut to your height and proportions.
Walking room
A fitted skirt is cut with a back vent, split, or kick pleat so you can walk and climb stairs comfortably without the skirt feeling restrictive.

Your Worries, Answered
The doubts most women have, and why you can relax
Pencil skirts always ride up or gape at my waist. Am I just hard to fit?
You are not, ready-to-wear is. Skirts are cut to one fixed waist-to-hip ratio, so if yours is different, the waist gapes or the hips pull and the skirt rides up. We cut your waist and your hip independently to your own measurements, so the skirt sits level with no gap and skims the hip without riding, and you confirm exactly that on the free test garment before the final skirt is made.
I can never walk comfortably in a fitted skirt. Will this be different?
Yes. A tailored pencil skirt is cut with a back vent, split, or kick pleat that gives you real stride room for walking and stairs, and with enough ease through the hip to sit down comfortably. When you try the free test garment, take a few steps and sit, and if you want more walking room we simply add it before the final skirt is cut.
I have never bought a skirt I could not try on first. How do I know it will fit?
Because you do try it on first. We make a free test skirt in a stand-in cloth to your measurements and post it to you. You put it on, walk, sit, and check the waist, hips, and length, then send us notes and photos. Only once you are happy do we cut your final cloth, so the finished skirt is a fit you have already approved.
I am nervous I will measure my waist or hips wrong.
You do not have to be exact. Our guide walks you through each measurement, a friend or a local tailor can help, and if you are unsure you can send your best numbers. The free test garment catches anything slightly off, we see the skirt on your body and adjust, so a first-try measurement is completely normal.
I struggle to find any skirt that flatters my shape. Is custom-made really for me?
It is made for exactly you. A small waist with fuller hips, or the reverse, a longer or shorter body, these are the shapes off-the-rack fails and custom-made tailoring fits best, because we cut to your proportions rather than a size. You also choose the length that flatters you, cut to your height, so nothing is left to chance.
What if it arrives and something is not quite right?
The final skirt is cut to the exact fit you approved on the test garment, so surprises are rare by design. If a small tweak is ever needed, the finished skirt carries seam allowances at the waist and seat so a local tailor can fine-tune it, and you can always contact us and we will help make it right.
What if my size changes later?
Your finished skirt is made with seam allowances, so a local tailor can take it in or let it out at the waist and seat within reason. And we keep your measurements on record, so ordering another skirt that fits is simple whenever you want one.
