Follow these simple steps to ensure your custom garment fits you perfectly. All you need is a flexible measuring tape.
Measure across your back from the edge of one shoulder to the edge of the other, keeping the tape flat.
Measure from the edge of your shoulder, along the outside of your relaxed arm, to your desired sleeve length.
Measure around the armhole where the sleeve joins the body. Pass the tape from the top of the shoulder, under the armpit, and back to the starting point. Keep the tape comfortably snug. Measure over a lightweight shirt or close-fitting clothing, keeping your arm relaxed at your side.
With muscles relaxed, measure around the fullest part of your upper arm. Keep the tape snug with room for one finger.
Wrap the measuring tape around your wrist bone, where a watch would sit. Keep the tape snug but not tight. Leave room for one finger between the tape and your wrist for comfort
Measure from the highest point of the shoulder, next to the neck, over the fullest part of the bust, and straight down to your desired garment length. Continue to the desired hem for the garment you are ordering, whether it’s a shirt, jacket, blazer, coat, or full-length coat.
Measure around the base of your neck where a collar would sit, keeping the tape level with room for one finger.
Stand straight with your arms relaxed. Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, keeping it level and snug with room for a finger.

All you need is a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help with the shoulder and back measurements. Wear close-fitting clothing so the tape sits against your body, stand naturally with your weight even on both feet, and keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger. Below is every measurement we may ask for. You do not have to get each number perfect: we send a free test garment before cutting your final cloth, so the fit is confirmed on your body first.

A women’s velvet tuxedo jacket is easy to find and hard to get right. Many of the ones online are stretch velvet with polyester satin trim, sold in dress sizes, and velvet is the least forgiving cloth for an inexact fit: it adds a little bulk, shows every pull as a shadow in the pile, and cannot be altered afterwards without leaving marks.

Free Test Jacket
With wool, a tailor can let a seam out or take it in and press the old line away. Velvet does not allow that: the old stitching leaves holes and a crushed line in the pile that stay visible. So the corrections are made on a cotton jacket instead, before the velvet is touched.
The corrections we make most often on women’s jackets are at the bust and the waist. When the bust does not follow the rest of the measurements, a single-button jacket either strains at the button or opens above it, so we may move the button or add shaping, keeping the button close enough that the front never gapes. If a change would alter the style, such as an extra dart through the velvet front, we explain it and you choose between an exact fit and the exact look in the photos.
Cutting Velvet
