How to Take Your Own Measurements for a Perfect Fit
All you need is a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help with the shoulder and back measurements. Wear close-fitting clothing so the tape sits against your body, stand naturally with your weight even on both feet, and keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger. Below is every measurement we may ask for. You do not have to get each number perfect: we send a free test garment before cutting your final cloth, so the fit is confirmed on your body first.

Stand straight with your arms relaxed and wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, keeping it level and snug with room for one finger.

Frequently asked questions about measuring yourself
How do I measure my bust, waist and length for a custom garment?
Use a flexible tape. For the bust, wrap it around the fullest part with the tape level. For the waist, measure the narrowest part, usually just above the belly button. For length, measure from the shoulder or natural waist down to your desired hem. Keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger, and measure over close-fitting clothing rather than bulky layers.
How do I measure my waist, hips, thighs and rise?
Measure the waist at the narrowest point, the hips around the widest part of your hips and seat, and the thigh around the fullest part of the upper leg. For the rise, sit down and measure from the front of your natural waist, down between your legs to the seat. Keep the tape level and snug throughout.
Where can I get my measurements taken?
Any local tailor or seamstress can take your measurements in a few minutes, and many fabric or bridal shops offer measuring too. You can also measure yourself at home with a flexible tape using this guide, or have a friend help with the back and shoulder measurements. Because we send a free test garment before cutting your final cloth, the fit is confirmed on your body regardless of who takes the first measurements.
What do I need to measure myself?
Just a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help with the shoulder and back measurements. Wear close-fitting clothing so the tape sits against your body, and stand naturally with your weight even on both feet.
How tight should the measuring tape be?
Snug but not tight. The tape should sit flat against your body with just enough room to slip one finger underneath. Pulling it too tight gives measurements that are too small, and leaving it loose makes the garment baggy.
What if my measurements are not perfect?
That is exactly why we send a free test garment. Give us your best measurements, and we build a test version in a stand-in cloth to your numbers and ship it to you. You try it on, we adjust from there, and nothing is cut in your final fabric until the fit is confirmed.

The Skirt
Women’s High Waisted Knee Length Pencil Skirt in Tropical Wool
A high waist knee length pencil skirt does two things a mid-rise skirt cannot: it marks the narrowest point of the body and it lengthens the leg below it. This one sits at your natural waist, cut to your measurements in a Super 140s tropical wool of about 8 oz, a light, open plain weave made for warm days and heated offices alike.
The 1.5 inch waistband has a grip inside, so a tucked shirt stays tucked, and its inside face is lined in cotton. The skirt closes with a concealed center back zipper, opens at a center back vent, and is fully lined in satin. It has no pockets. Light gray is the color in our photos; the same tropical wool comes in grays, blues, browns, beige, white and more in the selector.

Free Test Skirt
Settle the Waist on a Test Skirt First
Your first skirt is a cotton one, made from your measurements, sent free and yours to keep. It has no lining; the satin you choose is used only in the tropical wool skirt.
A high-waisted skirt is less forgiving at the waist than a mid-rise one, because it has to sit exactly at the narrowest point and stay there. On the test skirt we check that the waistband lies flat without rolling when you sit, that it does not gap at the back when you lean forward, and that the line from waist to hip has enough room. Small corrections at the back waist are the most common.

The High Waist
Why a High Waisted Knee Length Skirt Works
High waisted means the top of the skirt sits at the natural waist, the narrowest part of the torso, usually an inch or two above the navel. Most ready-made skirts sit lower, at the hip bone, because a lower rise forgives more sizes. A high waist knee length skirt only looks right when it is cut to that exact point, which is why we take the waist measurement at its narrowest and check it on the test skirt.
Worn with a shirt tucked in, as in our photo, the high waist makes the legs look longer and gives a clean line to a blazer that stops at the waist. It is a strong shape for a knee length business skirt, and it is the shape clients ask for when they want a skirt to carry a whole outfit.
The Cloths
Super 140s Tropical Wool, Color by Color
Tropical wool is a light worsted woven open, so air passes through it. At about 8 oz it is lighter than most suiting, and at Super 140s it is fine and smooth. It is a knee length wool skirt you can wear in a hot climate or a warm office without feeling wrapped in wool, and it still has enough body to hold a pencil line. Every color in the selector is the same tropical wool.

Pencil Skirt Lengths on a High Waist
Pencil skirt lengths change the look more than the cut does. On a high-waisted skirt the length is measured from the natural waist, so it reads longer than the same hem on a mid-rise skirt.

Questions About the High Waisted Pencil Skirt
Q. Where should a high waisted skirt sit?
A. At the natural waist, the narrowest part of your torso, usually an inch or two above the navel. If it sits lower it is a mid-rise skirt; if it sits higher it will ride up when you sit.
Q. Is a high waist knee length pencil skirt flattering on short women?
A. Usually yes. The high waist lengthens the line from the waist down, and a hem at or just above the knee keeps the proportion. Petite clients often take the hem slightly shorter; the test skirt shows the right point.
Q. What are the usual pencil skirt lengths?
A. Above the knee, at the knee and just below the knee are the three office lengths; midi to mid-calf is the longer option. This skirt is made to the length you enter on the measurement form.
Q. Is tropical wool too thin for winter?

The doubts most women have, and why you can relax
Pencil skirts always ride up or gape at my waist. Am I just hard to fit?
You are not, ready-to-wear is. Skirts are cut to one fixed waist-to-hip ratio, so if yours is different, the waist gapes or the hips pull and the skirt rides up. We cut your waist and your hip independently to your own measurements, so the skirt sits level with no gap and skims the hip without riding, and you confirm exactly that on the free test garment before the final skirt is made.
I can never walk comfortably in a fitted skirt. Will this be different?
Yes. A tailored pencil skirt is cut with a back vent, split, or kick pleat that gives you real stride room for walking and stairs, and with enough ease through the hip to sit down comfortably. When you try the free test garment, take a few steps and sit, and if you want more walking room we simply add it before the final skirt is cut.
I have never bought a skirt I could not try on first. How do I know it will fit?
Because you do try it on first. We make a free test skirt in a stand-in cloth to your measurements and post it to you. You put it on, walk, sit, and check the waist, hips, and length, then send us notes and photos. Only once you are happy do we cut your final cloth, so the finished skirt is a fit you have already approved.
I am nervous I will measure my waist or hips wrong.
You do not have to be exact. Our guide walks you through each measurement, a friend or a local tailor can help, and if you are unsure you can send your best numbers. The free test garment catches anything slightly off, we see the skirt on your body and adjust, so a first-try measurement is completely normal.
I struggle to find any skirt that flatters my shape. Is custom-made really for me?
It is made for exactly you. A small waist with fuller hips, or the reverse, a longer or shorter body, these are the shapes off-the-rack fails and custom-made tailoring fits best, because we cut to your proportions rather than a size. You also choose the length that flatters you, cut to your height, so nothing is left to chance.
What if it arrives and something is not quite right?
The final skirt is cut to the exact fit you approved on the test garment, so surprises are rare by design. If a small tweak is ever needed, the finished skirt carries seam allowances at the waist and seat so a local tailor can fine-tune it, and you can always contact us and we will help make it right.
What if my size changes later?
Your finished skirt is made with seam allowances, so a local tailor can take it in or let it out at the waist and seat within reason. And we keep your measurements on record, so ordering another skirt that fits is simple whenever you want one.
