All you need is a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help with the shoulder and back measurements. Wear close-fitting clothing so the tape sits against your body, stand naturally with your weight even on both feet, and keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger. Below is every measurement we may ask for. You do not have to get each number perfect: we send a free test garment before cutting your final cloth, so the fit is confirmed on your body first.

Frequently asked questions about measuring yourself
How do I measure my bust, waist and length for a custom garment?
Use a flexible tape. For the bust, wrap it around the fullest part with the tape level. For the waist, measure the narrowest part, usually just above the belly button. For length, measure from the shoulder or natural waist down to your desired hem. Keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger, and measure over close-fitting clothing rather than bulky layers.
How do I measure my waist, hips, thighs and rise?
Measure the waist at the narrowest point, the hips around the widest part of your hips and seat, and the thigh around the fullest part of the upper leg. For the rise, sit down and measure from the front of your natural waist, down between your legs to the seat. Keep the tape level and snug throughout.
Where can I get my measurements taken?
Any local tailor or seamstress can take your measurements in a few minutes, and many fabric or bridal shops offer measuring too. You can also measure yourself at home with a flexible tape using this guide, or have a friend help with the back and shoulder measurements. Because we send a free test garment before cutting your final cloth, the fit is confirmed on your body regardless of who takes the first measurements.
What do I need to measure myself?
Just a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help with the shoulder and back measurements. Wear close-fitting clothing so the tape sits against your body, and stand naturally with your weight even on both feet.
How tight should the measuring tape be?
Snug but not tight. The tape should sit flat against your body with just enough room to slip one finger underneath. Pulling it too tight gives measurements that are too small, and leaving it loose makes the garment baggy.
What if my measurements are not perfect?
That is exactly why we send a free test garment. Give us your best measurements, and we build a test version in a stand-in cloth to your numbers and ship it to you. You try it on, we adjust from there, and nothing is cut in your final fabric until the fit is confirmed.

Before we cut your chosen cloth, we make a test version of your garment in cotton, cut from the same pattern, and send it to you free. You try it on and tell us what to change. Only after you approve the fit do we make the final piece. The test garment is yours to keep.
This is the full production time across two stages. Your test garment takes 3 to 4 weeks to make. Once you approve the fit, your final garment takes another 3 to 4 weeks. Shipping is tracked and comes after production.

The Test Coat Finds the Tight Spots First
A client who ordered a navy velvet coat from us wrote in a review that the test garment was close but not right: the back was tight and the armholes too fitted. Photos came back to us, we changed the pattern, and the final coat fit, in the client’s words, like a second skin. That is the job of the cotton test coat, and on velvet it matters more than on any other cloth.

Across the back
A tight back crushes the pile between the shoulder blades when you reach forward.
Under the arms
Armholes cut too high rub the velvet flat on every step.

A front that pulls leaves a shiny X around the button.
At the elbow
Sleeves cut too narrow crush the pile inside the elbow every time you bend your arm.
Look at the back view: the pile lies smooth from shoulder to hem because the coat is not pulling anywhere. That is what the test coat is checked for.

Outside, the coat is quiet: deep navy velvet, three buttons, notch lapels and two diagonal pockets. Inside it is burgundy, which flashes every time the front swings open. The five-button working cuffs really unbutton.
For a full 12th Doctor outfit, wear it over a waistcoat, a dark shirt and black trousers with boots, as in the photos. Away from conventions, the same velvet coat goes over a black turtleneck and jeans, or over a dress for an evening out, and nobody needs to know where the idea came from.
Some people search for it as a 12th Doctor jacket, a twelfth Doctor coat or simply a 12th Doctor coat; at mid-thigh it is a coat, long enough to cover a jacket. Any length can be cut, and other velvets, such as black, green or burgundy, are in the selector.

Questions About the Women’s Navy Velvet Coat
Q. Is this the 12th Doctor’s coat from Doctor Who?
A. No, it is our own screen-inspired women’s version, with inspiration taken from the Twelfth Doctor’s navy velvet coat. It is not official or licensed. It is a replica cut to your measurements.
Q. Which 12th Doctor velvet coat is this?
A. The navy one, with a burgundy lining. The Twelfth Doctor also wore a burgundy velvet coat and a black velvet frock coat; see our burgundy velvet coat and black velvet frock coat for those.
Q. Why does fit matter more in velvet?
A. Because velvet pile crushes wherever the coat is tight, leaving shiny marks that do not brush out. The usual places are across the back, under the arms and around the button. The free test coat finds those tight spots before the velvet is cut.
Q. What color is the lining?
A. Burgundy by default. Any other satin lining can be chosen in the selector.
Q. Are the cuff buttons real?
A. Yes. All five buttons on each cuff work and can be undone.
Q. Is there room for a sonic prop?
A. Yes. There are two inside breast pockets, deep enough for one.
Q. Can I wear a navy velvet coat outside a convention?
A. Yes. Navy velvet over a white shirt and dark jeans, or over a black dress, is an evening coat in its own right. Nothing on the outside says costume.

A. Dry clean only, and not often. Hang it with space around it so the pile is not crushed, and steam it from a few inches away rather than pressing.

When I ordered the coat it wasn’t available as it is now, so I asked BB if they could make me a navy velvet with the pattern cut of the wool crombie and they told me I could mix any pattern with any fabric (all the possibilities!). So I went for it. First I received the test garment that was close to my measurements but not perfect. I then sent them pictures and also my personal opinion of what should be changed.
As example the back was tight and the armholes seemed too fitted.
Three weeks later I received my coat (I assume its the one you see in the picture ;)) and man, I can’t describe how soft the velvet feels. Like the fur of a young kitten or something. The fit is like my second skin and everything I wanted to have was changed. They did perfectly. There is no flaw I could point out.
I also have to point out, that the costumer service was top notch. Quick answers and totally polite and professional. This team are really pros with their work being able to make you a coat made to your measures without seeing you once in person.
I can only recommend BB, this coat and their service, and I will be sure having another coat made soon. Thanks BB!

The most common fear is simple: will it be roomy enough over a jumper, but still shaped and not a sack? With a made-to-measure coat you do not have to choose. There are no standard sizes, we cut it to your measurements with the right ease built in for layering, and a free test garment confirms the fit, over your usual layers, before your final cloth is cut. Your Worries, Answered
The doubts most women have, and why you can relax
I am worried a custom-made coat will be too tight over my jumpers.
This is the most common coat worry, and it is exactly what we plan for. A coat is cut with more ease than a jacket precisely so it closes comfortably over your layers, and when you try the free test garment we ask you to put it on over the jumper or blazer you would normally wear underneath. If it feels at all snug, we add room before the final cloth is cut, so the finished coat is never tight over your usual layers.
A coat is a big spend. What if it arrives and it is wrong?
Nothing final, and nothing costly, is cut until you have approved the fit on the free test garment. You are not gambling a large sum on a coat you have never seen on your body; you are confirming the fit on a test version first, over your layers, and only then do we cut the real cloth. That is the whole point of the process, to take the risk out of the biggest, most visible piece in your wardrobe.
I have never been able to find a coat that fits my shoulders and my shape at once.

I am nervous about measuring myself for something this important.
You do not need to get it perfect. Our guide takes you through each measurement, a friend or a local tailor can help, and you measure over light clothing so we can allow for layers ourselves. The free test garment is there to catch anything that is slightly off, we see the coat on your body and adjust, so a first-try measurement is completely fine.
How do I choose the right length without seeing it on?
Tell us the look you want, cropped, mid-thigh, knee, or full-length, and we draft it to your height so the proportion suits your frame. If you are unsure, a length that ends around the mid-thigh or knee flatters most people. The test garment then lets you see the length on your body and change it before the final coat is cut, so you are never guessing.
Will a fitted coat still look shaped, or will it end up boxy to fit the layers?
It stays shaped. We build in enough room for layers while still cutting a waist and a clean line, so the coat reads as tailored, not as a box. You choose how close or relaxed you want it, and the test garment lets you confirm that balance of room and shape on your own body.
What if my size changes, or I want to wear it over heavier layers in future?
Coats carry generous seam allowances, so a local tailor can adjust the body within reason if your shape changes. And because we cut with layering in mind and keep your measurements on record, you can tell us up front if you plan to wear it over heavy knits, and we allow for it.
The whole custom process feels intimidating. What actually happens?
It is simpler than it sounds. You choose the coat, cloth, and length and send your measurements; we make a free test garment and post it to you; you try it on over your layers and send notes and photos; we adjust and then cut and hand-tailor your final coat; and it ships to you with tracking. At no point are you committing to a finished coat you have not already seen fit on your body.

When I ordered the coat it wasn’t available as it is now, so I asked BB if they could make me a navy velvet with the pattern cut of the wool crombie and they told me I could mix any pattern with any fabric (all the possibilities!). So I went for it. First I received the test garment that was close to my measurements but not perfect. I then sent them pictures and also my personal opinion of what should be changed.
As example the back was tight and the armholes seemed too fitted.
Three weeks later I received my coat (I assume its the one you see in the picture ;)) and man, I can’t describe how soft the velvet feels. Like the fur of a young kitten or something. The fit is like my second skin and everything I wanted to have was changed. They did perfectly. There is no flaw I could point out.
I also have to point out, that the costumer service was top notch. Quick answers and totally polite and professional. This team are really pros with their work being able to make you a coat made to your measures without seeing you once in person.
