How to Take Your Own Measurements for a Perfect Fit
All you need is a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help with the shoulder and back measurements. Wear close-fitting clothing so the tape sits against your body, stand naturally with your weight even on both feet, and keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger. Stand straight with your arms relaxed and wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, keeping it level and snug with room for one finger.

Frequently asked questions about measuring yourself
How do I measure my bust, waist and length for a custom garment?
Use a flexible tape. For the bust, wrap it around the fullest part with the tape level. For the waist, measure the narrowest part, usually just above the belly button. For length, measure from the shoulder or natural waist down to your desired hem. Keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger, and measure over close-fitting clothing rather than bulky layers.
How do I measure my waist, hips, thighs and rise?
Measure the waist at the narrowest point, the hips around the widest part of your hips and seat, and the thigh around the fullest part of the upper leg. For the rise, sit down and measure from the front of your natural waist, down between your legs to the seat. Keep the tape level and snug throughout.
Where can I get my measurements taken?
Any local tailor or seamstress can take your measurements in a few minutes, and many fabric or bridal shops offer measuring too. You can also measure yourself at home with a flexible tape using this guide, or have a friend help with the back and shoulder measurements. Because we send a free test garment before cutting your final cloth, the fit is confirmed on your body regardless of who takes the first measurements.
What do I need to measure myself?

How tight should the measuring tape be?
Snug but not tight. The tape should sit flat against your body with just enough room to slip one finger underneath. Pulling it too tight gives measurements that are too small, and leaving it loose makes the garment baggy.
What if my measurements are not perfect?
That is exactly why we send a free test garment. Give us your best measurements, and we build a test version in a stand-in cloth to your numbers and ship it to you. You try it on, we adjust from there, and nothing is cut in your final fabric until the fit is confirmed.

The Skirt
Women’s Gray Pencil Skirt in Mohair and Wool
Search for a mohair skirt and most of what you find is soft and fuzzy: brushed knits, A-lines and elastic waists. This is the other kind of mohair. It is a gray pencil skirt cut to your measurements in a Super 140s mohair and wool blend woven as suiting cloth, smooth to the touch with a dry, quiet luster, the same family of cloth used for summer suits and evening wear. Mohair gives the cloth spring, so creases from a long day or a flight drop out instead of setting.
The skirt is a tailored pencil skirt with a straight, fitted line from hip to knee, a 2 inch tall waistband with a grip inside to keep a blouse tucked, a hidden center back zipper and a center back vent. It is fully lined in satin and has no pockets. Gray is the color in our photos; the mohair also comes in navy, black, teal and other shades in the selector.

Fit a Gray Skirt on a Test Skirt First
Before the mohair is cut, we make your skirt in cotton from your measurements and send it to you free; it is yours to keep. The test skirt has no lining, so you see the pure fit; your satin lining goes into the mohair skirt.
A gray fitted skirt shows every line, more than black does, so the test skirt matters here. Light gray catches shadow wherever cloth pulls: across the front when you sit, or in a fold under the seat when the back is cut too long. Clients send photos from the front, side and back; most adjustments are small and happen at the seat, the waistband height and the hem.

A Mohair Skirt Woven Like Suiting, Not Knitted
Mohair comes from the Angora goat. Spun loosely and brushed, it makes the fluffy knits most people picture. Spun tightly and woven with wool, as here, it makes a crisp, slightly lustrous cloth that resists creasing and holds a sharp edge. That is why the same blend appears in tailoring rather than knitwear.

From Behind
The Pencil Skirt Back: What a Good Fit Looks Like
Look at the pencil skirt from behind before you buy one. On a good pencil skirt back, the waistband runs level across the back, the zipper hangs straight, and the cloth falls clean from the seat to the hem without a fold. In a skirt back view like ours, the back seam should run plumb; if it swings to one side, the hip is uneven and the pattern needs adjusting.
The pencil skirt silhouette depends on that line. A gray straight skirt that pulls across the seat or bags beneath it reads as cheap from across a room, however fine the cloth. That is the part of the fit the test skirt photos check first.

Questions About the Mohair Pencil Skirt
Q. Is a mohair skirt itchy or fuzzy?
A. Not this one. Fuzzy mohair skirts are knitted from brushed yarn; this is woven from tightly spun mohair and wool, so the surface is smooth, and it is fully lined in satin, so the cloth does not sit against your skin.
Q. What is the difference between mohair and wool in a skirt?
A. Mohair adds spring and a light sheen. A mohair and wool cloth recovers from creases faster than plain wool and keeps a crisper edge, while the wool gives it body and drape. The result looks pressed for longer.
Q. Is mohair good for summer?
A. Woven mohair is one of the cooler suiting cloths, which is why it has long been used for summer suits. The open structure of the yarn lets air through, and in a light gray the skirt reads cool too.
Q. What should I wear with a gray pencil skirt?

The doubts most women have, and why you can relax
Pencil skirts always ride up or gape at my waist. Am I just hard to fit?
You are not, ready-to-wear is. Skirts are cut to one fixed waist-to-hip ratio, so if yours is different, the waist gapes or the hips pull and the skirt rides up. We cut your waist and your hip independently to your own measurements, so the skirt sits level with no gap and skims the hip without riding, and you confirm exactly that on the free test garment before the final skirt is made.
I can never walk comfortably in a fitted skirt. Will this be different?
Yes. A tailored pencil skirt is cut with a back vent, split, or kick pleat that gives you real stride room for walking and stairs, and with enough ease through the hip to sit down comfortably. When you try the free test garment, take a few steps and sit, and if you want more walking room we simply add it before the final skirt is cut.
I have never bought a skirt I could not try on first. How do I know it will fit?
Because you do try it on first. We make a free test skirt in a stand-in cloth to your measurements and post it to you. You put it on, walk, sit, and check the waist, hips, and length, then send us notes and photos. Only once you are happy do we cut your final cloth, so the finished skirt is a fit you have already approved.
I am nervous I will measure my waist or hips wrong.
You do not have to be exact. Our guide walks you through each measurement, a friend or a local tailor can help, and if you are unsure you can send your best numbers. The free test garment catches anything slightly off, we see the skirt on your body and adjust, so a first-try measurement is completely normal.
I struggle to find any skirt that flatters my shape. Is custom-made really for me?
It is made for exactly you. A small waist with fuller hips, or the reverse, a longer or shorter body, these are the shapes off-the-rack fails and custom-made tailoring fits best, because we cut to your proportions rather than a size. You also choose the length that flatters you, cut to your height, so nothing is left to chance.
What if it arrives and something is not quite right?
The final skirt is cut to the exact fit you approved on the test garment, so surprises are rare by design. If a small tweak is ever needed, the finished skirt carries seam allowances at the waist and seat so a local tailor can fine-tune it, and you can always contact us and we will help make it right.
What if my size changes later?
Your finished skirt is made with seam allowances, so a local tailor can take it in or let it out at the waist and seat within reason. And we keep your measurements on record, so ordering another skirt that fits is simple whenever you want one.
