All you need is a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help with the shoulder and back measurements. Stand straight with your arms relaxed and wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, keeping it level and snug with room for one finger.

Frequently asked questions about measuring yourself
How do I measure my bust, waist and length for a custom garment?
Use a flexible tape. For the bust, wrap it around the fullest part with the tape level. For the waist, measure the narrowest part, usually just above the belly button. For length, measure from the shoulder or natural waist down to your desired hem. Keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger, and measure over close-fitting clothing rather than bulky layers.
How do I measure my waist, hips, thighs and rise?
Measure the waist at the narrowest point, the hips around the widest part of your hips and seat, and the thigh around the fullest part of the upper leg. For the rise, sit down and measure from the front of your natural waist, down between your legs to the seat. Keep the tape level and snug throughout.
Where can I get my measurements taken?
Any local tailor or seamstress can take your measurements in a few minutes, and many fabric or bridal shops offer measuring too. You can also measure yourself at home with a flexible tape using this guide, or have a friend help with the back and shoulder measurements. Because we send a free test garment before cutting your final cloth, the fit is confirmed on your body regardless of who takes the first measurements.
What do I need to measure myself?

How tight should the measuring tape be?
Snug but not tight. The tape should sit flat against your body with just enough room to slip one finger underneath. Pulling it too tight gives measurements that are too small, and leaving it loose makes the garment baggy.
What if my measurements are not perfect?
That is exactly why we send a free test garment. Give us your best measurements, and we build a test version in a stand-in cloth to your numbers and ship it to you. You try it on, we adjust from there, and nothing is cut in your final fabric until the fit is confirmed.

The Skirt
Women’s Navy Pinstripe Pencil Skirt in Merino and Cashmere
A pinstripe pencil skirt is honest about its fit. On a flat table every stripe runs straight; on a body, any tension at the hip bends them, and the eye catches a curved stripe long before it notices anything else. This navy pinstripe pencil skirt is cut to your measurements so the stripes fall plumb from waist to hem, in a Super 130s cloth of 98% merino wool and 2% cashmere.
Thin white stripes on navy is the color in our photos; the same stripe also comes on light gray, dark gray and black in the selector. The skirt is knee length, with a 1.5 inch waistband that has a grip inside to keep a blouse tucked and a cotton-lined inside face, a hidden center back zipper and a center back vent. It is fully lined in satin and has no pockets.
Search for a navy stripe skirt or a navy pinstripe skirt and most of what comes back is a printed stripe on stretch crepe. A Test Skirt to Keep the Stripes Straight
We first make your skirt in cotton from your measurements and post it to you at no charge; you keep it. It is unlined, and your satin lining goes only into the striped skirt.
For a striped skirt the test garment answers one question above all: does the skirt hang straight on you? If it is tight across the seat or one hip sits higher, a striped cloth would show it as bent lines, so we look for pulling at the hip and a hem that rises at the back. The test skirt is plain cotton, yet the same tension shows as drag lines, and your photos tell us where to give ease.

What a Good Striped Pencil Skirt Looks Like
Three things decide whether a striped pencil skirt looks tailored or cheap:

| Matching at the back | Stripes meet at the center back seam and run on past the zipper and into the vent |

Pinstripe or chalk stripe? A pinstripe is a fine, sharp line, as here; a chalk stripe is softer and wider, like a line drawn in chalk. The fine line is the more formal and reads as a blue pinstripe skirt from across a room, plain navy up close only in very low light.

Styling a Navy Pinstripe Skirt
A navy blue striped skirt is easier to wear than it looks. Keep the top plain and let the stripe do the work: white, pale blue, pink or cream blouses, or a navy fine knit for a quieter look. As a navy blue skirt with white stripes, it pairs with a solid navy jacket for a suit look without a matching suit, and with a cream or camel coat in winter.
Avoid a second stripe near it unless it is far finer or far bolder; two pinstripes of a similar width compete. Shoes in navy, black or nude keep the leg line long under a knee-length hem.

Questions About the Pinstripe Pencil Skirt
Q. Why do the stripes on some striped pencil skirts look curved?
A. Because the skirt is pulling. When a pencil skirt is tight over the hip or seat, the cloth stretches across and the stripes bow outward. A skirt cut to your measurements, with the fit checked on a test skirt, lets the stripes hang straight.
Q. Is this a blue pinstripe skirt or navy?
A. Navy: a deep blue with fine white pinstripes. In daylight it reads clearly blue; under office lighting it looks darker. If you want a lighter blue pin stripe skirt, ask us; the stripes on offer are in the selector.
Q. What is the difference between a pinstripe and a chalk stripe?

You choose the length and the fit, we cut the waist and hip to your measurements, and a free test garment confirms it on you before your final cloth is cut. Your Worries, Answered
The doubts most women have, and why you can relax
Pencil skirts always ride up or gape at my waist. Am I just hard to fit?
You are not, ready-to-wear is. Skirts are cut to one fixed waist-to-hip ratio, so if yours is different, the waist gapes or the hips pull and the skirt rides up. We cut your waist and your hip independently to your own measurements, so the skirt sits level with no gap and skims the hip without riding, and you confirm exactly that on the free test garment before the final skirt is made.
I can never walk comfortably in a fitted skirt. Will this be different?
Yes. A tailored pencil skirt is cut with a back vent, split, or kick pleat that gives you real stride room for walking and stairs, and with enough ease through the hip to sit down comfortably. When you try the free test garment, take a few steps and sit, and if you want more walking room we simply add it before the final skirt is cut.
I have never bought a skirt I could not try on first. How do I know it will fit?
Because you do try it on first. We make a free test skirt in a stand-in cloth to your measurements and post it to you. You put it on, walk, sit, and check the waist, hips, and length, then send us notes and photos. Only once you are happy do we cut your final cloth, so the finished skirt is a fit you have already approved.
I am nervous I will measure my waist or hips wrong.
You do not have to be exact. Our guide walks you through each measurement, a friend or a local tailor can help, and if you are unsure you can send your best numbers. The free test garment catches anything slightly off, we see the skirt on your body and adjust, so a first-try measurement is completely normal.
I struggle to find any skirt that flatters my shape. Is custom-made really for me?
It is made for exactly you. A small waist with fuller hips, or the reverse, a longer or shorter body, these are the shapes off-the-rack fails and custom-made tailoring fits best, because we cut to your proportions rather than a size. You also choose the length that flatters you, cut to your height, so nothing is left to chance.
What if it arrives and something is not quite right?
The final skirt is cut to the exact fit you approved on the test garment, so surprises are rare by design. If a small tweak is ever needed, the finished skirt carries seam allowances at the waist and seat so a local tailor can fine-tune it, and you can always contact us and we will help make it right.
What if my size changes later?
Your finished skirt is made with seam allowances, so a local tailor can take it in or let it out at the waist and seat within reason. And we keep your measurements on record, so ordering another skirt that fits is simple whenever you want one.
