Because there is nothing to hide behind. A lined coat holds its shape independent of the body underneath. An unlined coat drapes directly against whatever it is placed over — which means every fit issue is immediately visible. A shoulder that is too wide, a torso that is too long, a sleeve that pitches incorrectly — all of it shows. The test coat lets you see exactly how your coat will fit before we cut the final linen. It is the most important step in the process for this specific garment.
Every linen duster coat I’ve ordered online has been too big. How is this different?

Can I specify a coat length shorter or longer than mid-thigh?

The test coat also gives you the opportunity to check the length on your actual frame before the linen is cut — if it needs adjusting, we adjust before final production.
Is linen really machine washable? I thought it needed dry-cleaning.
This coat is machine washable. Linen is one of the most practical fabrics for warm weather — it washes well, dries quickly, and the natural texture means light creasing reads as intentional rather than unkempt. Cold wash, gentle cycle, hang to dry. If it creases in a way you do not like, a light steam press resolves it.

Natural linen is the most versatile — it pairs with almost everything and the slight warmth of the natural fiber reads well in all seasons. Off-white and khaki are similar. With a custom-made jacket there are no standard sizes: you choose the fit, we cut the shoulders and body to your measurements, and a free test garment confirms it on you before your final cloth is ever cut. Shoulders (the key)
The shoulder seam sits exactly at the edge of your shoulder, with no overhang past the arm and no divot or pulling. This is the single most important line, and the hardest to alter, so we cut it precisely to you and confirm it on the test garment.
Bust & button
When fastened, the jacket closes cleanly with no strain lines radiating from the button and no gap that pulls open across the bust. A women’s jacket is shaped with darts to curve around the bust rather than straining over it.
Waist & length
The jacket draws in at your natural waist for shape, and the hem ends around the top of your hip (longer or shorter is your choice). You should be able to fasten it and still sit down comfortably.
Sleeve & armhole
The sleeve finishes at your wrist bone, so a little shirt cuff can show, and the armhole sits high enough to let you raise your arm without the whole jacket lifting. Both are cut to your measurements.

My jackets always pull or gape at the bust. Will this finally sit right?
Yes, and it is one of the main reasons women come to us. Off-the-rack jackets are cut for an average bust, so they strain at the button or gape open. We shape the jacket with darts and cut it to your real bust measurement, so it closes cleanly with no pulling and no gap, and if the free test garment shows even a hint of strain, we correct it before the final jacket is made. I have never bought a jacket I could not try on first. How do I know it will fit?
Because you do try it on first. We make a free test jacket in a stand-in cloth to your measurements and post it to you. You put it on, check the shoulders, bust, waist, and sleeves, and send us your notes and a couple of photos. Only once you are happy do we cut your final cloth, so the finished jacket is a fit you have already approved, not a gamble.
My shoulders are broad, or narrow, and jackets never sit right on them. Can you cut for that?

You do not have to be perfect. Our guide takes you through each measurement, a friend or a local tailor can help, and if you are unsure you can send your best numbers. The free test garment is there to catch any small error, we see the jacket on your body and adjust, so a first-try measurement is completely fine.
I have always struggled to find a blazer that fits my shape. Is this really for me?

A fuller bust with a small waist, broad or narrow shoulders, a long or short torso, these are the shapes off-the-rack fails, and the ones made to your measurements fits best, because we cut to your proportions rather than an average. There is no wrong shape here, only your measurements.

What if my size changes later?
The finished jacket is made with seam allowances, so a local tailor can take it in or let it out at the waist and sides within reason.
