All you need is a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help with the shoulder and back measurements. Wear close-fitting clothing so the tape sits against your body, stand naturally with your weight even on both feet, and keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger. Frequently asked questions about measuring yourself
How do I measure my bust, waist and length for a custom garment?
Use a flexible tape. For the bust, wrap it around the fullest part with the tape level. For the waist, measure the narrowest part, usually just above the belly button. For length, measure from the shoulder or natural waist down to your desired hem. Keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger, and measure over close-fitting clothing rather than bulky layers.
How do I measure my waist, hips, thighs and rise?
Measure the waist at the narrowest point, the hips around the widest part of your hips and seat, and the thigh around the fullest part of the upper leg. For the rise, sit down and measure from the front of your natural waist, down between your legs to the seat. Keep the tape level and snug throughout.
Where can I get my measurements taken?
Any local tailor or seamstress can take your measurements in a few minutes, and many fabric or bridal shops offer measuring too. You can also measure yourself at home with a flexible tape using this guide, or have a friend help with the back and shoulder measurements. Because we send a free test garment before cutting your final cloth, the fit is confirmed on your body regardless of who takes the first measurements.
What do I need to measure myself?
Just a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help with the shoulder and back measurements. Wear close-fitting clothing so the tape sits against your body, and stand naturally with your weight even on both feet.
How tight should the measuring tape be?
Snug but not tight. The tape should sit flat against your body with just enough room to slip one finger underneath. Pulling it too tight gives measurements that are too small, and leaving it loose makes the garment baggy.
What if my measurements are not perfect?
That is exactly why we send a free test garment. Give us your best measurements, and we build a test version in a stand-in cloth to your numbers and ship it to you. You try it on, we adjust from there, and nothing is cut in your final fabric until the fit is confirmed.

Before we cut your chosen cloth, we make a test version of your garment in cotton, cut from the same pattern, and send it to you free. You try it on and tell us what to change. Only after you approve the fit do we make the final piece. The test garment is yours to keep.
This is the full production time across two stages. Your test garment takes 3 to 4 weeks to make. Once you approve the fit, your final garment takes another 3 to 4 weeks. Shipping is tracked and comes after production.

Flannel is wool brushed after weaving, which gives it a soft, matte surface and a little warmth trapped in the nap. Super 120s describes a fine wool fiber, so the cloth is soft without being flimsy. It is warm enough for a light winter and comfortable in spring and autumn, and it does not shine with wear the way smooth worsted can.

Q. Is this the 12th Doctor’s coat from Doctor Who?
A. No, it is our own screen-inspired women’s version of the Twelfth Doctor’s blue coat with red lining. It is not official or licensed. It is a replica cut to your measurements in wool flannel.
Q. What coat does the 12th Doctor wear?
A. His signature coat is a dark navy, three-quarter length coat in the Crombie style with a red lining, worn over a white shirt and a cardigan or waistcoat. Later series added a burgundy velvet coat and a black velvet frock coat. This page is the blue coat; for the velvet versions see our burgundy velvet coat and black velvet frock coat.
Q. Can I wear it every day?
A. Yes. In blue flannel with the coat closed, it reads as a plain tailored coat, and flannel does not shine with wear. The red lining only shows when it opens.
Q. How warm is it?
A. Warm enough for a light winter, and comfortable in spring and fall. For a colder climate, wear a sweater under it and size for that in the test coat.
Q. Can I change the fabric or add a velvet collar?
A. Yes. Write it in the comment box of the measurement form, or email us with your order number. Other flannels are in the selector.
Q. What color is the lining?
A. Red by default. Any other satin lining can be chosen in the selector.
Q. Is it the same as the men’s 12th Doctor blue coat?
A. It is inspired by the same coat but cut as a women’s coat, with the bust and waist shaped. It is then fitted to your measurements in the test coat.
Q. Is it good for cosplay?
A. Yes, and it is light enough to wear indoors at a convention all day. Over a white shirt and a dark waistcoat it gives the full look, and afterward it works as an ordinary winter coat.
Q. How do I measure without a tailor nearby?
A. A helper makes it easier. Alone, measure bust, natural waist and hips, then a coat that fits you well; we can guide you by video call or WhatsApp.
Q. Can I see the blue flannel first?
A. Yes. Our swatch service sends up to four samples of about 2 by 4 inches. They usually arrive within 4 to 6 business days. Quote product number 7000011 and the colors you want to compare; the courier fee is credited toward your first order.
Q. How long will the coat take?
A. The cotton test coat takes 3 to 4 weeks to make and arrives 5 to 10 days after dispatch. The flannel coat then takes 3 to 4 weeks and arrives 5 to 10 days after it ships.
Q. How do I care for it?
A. Dry clean only, and not often. Brush the flannel after wearing and hang it on a shaped hanger.

Cut a touch longer than a jacket so they cover your wrist and a shirt or jumper cuff, and sit correctly when your arms are down.

Your Worries, Answered
The doubts most women have, and why you can relax
I am worried a custom-made coat will be too tight over my jumpers.
This is the most common coat worry, and it is exactly what we plan for. A coat is cut with more ease than a jacket precisely so it closes comfortably over your layers, and when you try the free test garment we ask you to put it on over the jumper or blazer you would normally wear underneath. If it feels at all snug, we add room before the final cloth is cut, so the finished coat is never tight over your usual layers.
A coat is a big spend. What if it arrives and it is wrong?
Nothing final, and nothing costly, is cut until you have approved the fit on the free test garment. You are not gambling a large sum on a coat you have never seen on your body; you are confirming the fit on a test version first, over your layers, and only then do we cut the real cloth. That is the whole point of the process, to take the risk out of the biggest, most visible piece in your wardrobe.
I have never been able to find a coat that fits my shoulders and my shape at once.
That is precisely who custom-made is for. Off-the-rack coats are cut to an average frame, so if your shoulders, bust, or height are not average, something is always wrong. We cut the shoulders, body, and length to your own measurements, so the coat fits your frame rather than a size, and the test garment confirms it before we commit to the final cloth.
I am nervous about measuring myself for something this important.
You do not need to get it perfect. Our guide takes you through each measurement, a friend or a local tailor can help, and you measure over light clothing so we can allow for layers ourselves. The free test garment is there to catch anything that is slightly off, we see the coat on your body and adjust, so a first-try measurement is completely fine.
How do I choose the right length without seeing it on?
Tell us the look you want, cropped, mid-thigh, knee, or full-length, and we draft it to your height so the proportion suits your frame. If you are unsure, a length that ends around the mid-thigh or knee flatters most people. The test garment then lets you see the length on your body and change it before the final coat is cut, so you are never guessing.
Will a fitted coat still look shaped, or will it end up boxy to fit the layers?
It stays shaped. We build in enough room for layers while still cutting a waist and a clean line, so the coat reads as tailored, not as a box. You choose how close or relaxed you want it, and the test garment lets you confirm that balance of room and shape on your own body.
What if my size changes, or I want to wear it over heavier layers in future?
Coats carry generous seam allowances, so a local tailor can adjust the body within reason if your shape changes. And because we cut with layering in mind and keep your measurements on record, you can tell us up front if you plan to wear it over heavy knits, and we allow for it.
The whole custom process feels intimidating. What actually happens?
It is simpler than it sounds. You choose the coat, cloth, and length and send your measurements; we make a free test garment and post it to you; you try it on over your layers and send notes and photos; we adjust and then cut and hand-tailor your final coat; and it ships to you with tracking. At no point are you committing to a finished coat you have not already seen fit on your body.

I ordered this coat with several custom specs (using a different fabric, velvet collar, etc) and BB accommodated all of my requests. The test garment didn’t fit perfectly, but after I sent them photos of it so they could make adjustments the final coat was a great fit.
Shipping/production was very quick– the test garment came ~2.5 weeks after ordering and the final product about 3-4 weeks later.
