How do I measure my bust, waist and length for a custom garment?

What do I need to measure myself?

How tight should the measuring tape be?

Over a Dress
Why Most Winter Coats Hide the Dress
Plenty of coats sold as women’s winter dress coats are cut straight and loose to fit any body, so they stand away from the waist and make every dress underneath look the same. A good dress coat for women does three things differently:
It follows the waist
The belted back draws the coat in at the waist, so the line of the dress continues under the coat.
It lies flat at the hips
The pockets sit in the side seams, not on top of them, so nothing bulges over the hips.
It covers the hem
Knee length covers a knee-length dress. For a long winter coat dress look, enter a longer length on the measurement form.
That is the difference between ladies dress coats and ordinary coats. If you searched for long dress coats for ladies, any length can be cut; for a midi dress, ask for a coat that ends just below its hem.
The Back
The Back of the Coat Is Where It Earns Its Name
Look at the back of the coat: a half belt across the waist and, below it, a deep inverted kick pleat. The belt shapes; the pleat opens when you walk, climb stairs or sit, so the coat never pulls tight over the skirt. The side view shows how the hem falls straight from the hip.

Melton is a dense wool cloth that is milled after weaving, so the surface closes up, feels smooth and stops the wind instead of letting it through the gaps between the threads. Ours weighs about 450 to 500 gsm, a true winter coat weight.
That makes it one of those cozy winter Melton coats that are still slim: warm because the cloth is dense, not because it is thick, so a wool dress coat in Melton does not add bulk over a dress. The most common fear is simple: will it be roomy enough over a jumper, but still shaped and not a sack? With a made-to-measure coat you do not have to choose. Your Worries, Answered
The doubts most women have, and why you can relax
I am worried a custom-made coat will be too tight over my jumpers.
This is the most common coat worry, and it is exactly what we plan for. A coat is cut with more ease than a jacket precisely so it closes comfortably over your layers, and when you try the free test garment we ask you to put it on over the jumper or blazer you would normally wear underneath. If it feels at all snug, we add room before the final cloth is cut, so the finished coat is never tight over your usual layers.
A coat is a big spend. What if it arrives and it is wrong?
Nothing final, and nothing costly, is cut until you have approved the fit on the free test garment. You are not gambling a large sum on a coat you have never seen on your body; you are confirming the fit on a test version first, over your layers, and only then do we cut the real cloth. That is the whole point of the process, to take the risk out of the biggest, most visible piece in your wardrobe.
I have never been able to find a coat that fits my shoulders and my shape at once.

How do I choose the right length without seeing it on?
Tell us the look you want, cropped, mid-thigh, knee, or full-length, and we draft it to your height so the proportion suits your frame. If you are unsure, a length that ends around the mid-thigh or knee flatters most people. The test garment then lets you see the length on your body and change it before the final coat is cut, so you are never guessing.
Will a fitted coat still look shaped, or will it end up boxy to fit the layers?
It stays shaped. We build in enough room for layers while still cutting a waist and a clean line, so the coat reads as tailored, not as a box. You choose how close or relaxed you want it, and the test garment lets you confirm that balance of room and shape on your own body.

Coats carry generous seam allowances, so a local tailor can adjust the body within reason if your shape changes. And because we cut with layering in mind and keep your measurements on record, you can tell us up front if you plan to wear it over heavy knits, and we allow for it.
The whole custom process feels intimidating. What actually happens?
It is simpler than it sounds. You choose the coat, cloth, and length and send your measurements; we make a free test garment and post it to you; you try it on over your layers and send notes and photos; we adjust and then cut and hand-tailor your final coat; and it ships to you with tracking. At no point are you committing to a finished coat you have not already seen fit on your body.
