How to Take Your Own Measurements for a Perfect Fit
All you need is a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help with the shoulder and back measurements. Wear close-fitting clothing so the tape sits against your body, stand naturally with your weight even on both feet, and keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger. Stand straight with your arms relaxed and wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, keeping it level and snug with room for one finger.

Frequently asked questions about measuring yourself
How do I measure my bust, waist and length for a custom garment?
Use a flexible tape. For the bust, wrap it around the fullest part with the tape level. For the waist, measure the narrowest part, usually just above the belly button. For length, measure from the shoulder or natural waist down to your desired hem. Keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger, and measure over close-fitting clothing rather than bulky layers.
How do I measure my waist, hips, thighs and rise?
Measure the waist at the narrowest point, the hips around the widest part of your hips and seat, and the thigh around the fullest part of the upper leg. For the rise, sit down and measure from the front of your natural waist, down between your legs to the seat. Keep the tape level and snug throughout.
Where can I get my measurements taken?
Any local tailor or seamstress can take your measurements in a few minutes, and many fabric or bridal shops offer measuring too. You can also measure yourself at home with a flexible tape using this guide, or have a friend help with the back and shoulder measurements. Because we send a free test garment before cutting your final cloth, the fit is confirmed on your body regardless of who takes the first measurements.
What do I need to measure myself?

How tight should the measuring tape be?
Snug but not tight. The tape should sit flat against your body with just enough room to slip one finger underneath. Pulling it too tight gives measurements that are too small, and leaving it loose makes the garment baggy.
What if my measurements are not perfect?
That is exactly why we send a free test garment. Give us your best measurements, and we build a test version in a stand-in cloth to your numbers and ship it to you. You try it on, we adjust from there, and nothing is cut in your final fabric until the fit is confirmed.

The Skirt
Women’s Black Pencil Skirt With White Piping in Fresco Wool
This black skirt with white trim is drawn as much as it is cut. Fine white piping runs along the top and bottom of the waistband and down the length of the skirt, two lines on the front and two on the back, curving in at the waist and out over the hip. The lines trace the body, so the eye reads a narrower waist and a longer leg than a plain skirt shows.
It is a knee-length pencil skirt made to your measurements in Super 130s high-twist fresco wool, a crisp open weave that breathes and lets creases drop out. The 1.5 inch high waistband has a grip inside to keep a blouse tucked and an inside face lined in cotton. It closes with a hidden center back zipper, has a center back vent, is fully lined in satin and has no pockets.

Placing the Lines on a Test Skirt
We make your skirt first in cotton, from your measurements, and send it to you free to keep. It is unlined; your satin lining goes only into the fresco skirt.
On a piped skirt the test garment matters more than usual, because the white lines show the fit to everyone. If the skirt is tight at the hip, the side lines bow outward; if the back is too long, the lines wander as they reach the vent. On the test skirt we look at where the lines would fall on your body, and move them in or out so they sit symmetrically and follow your shape.

Piping is a thin cord wrapped in cloth and sewn into a seam, so the line sits slightly raised and stays crisp through wear and cleaning. The contrast of white on black is what makes the shape: viewed from a distance, a black skirt with lines placed this way looks narrower at the waist than a plain one of the same size.
From behind, the pencil skirt back shows the two lines either side of the hidden zipper. They should sit at the same distance from the center all the way down; this is the first thing we check on your test skirt photos.

Q. Does the white piping make a skirt look slimmer?
A. Placed like this, yes. Two lines that curve in at the waist and run straight down draw the eye vertically and frame the narrowest point, so the skirt reads narrower than a plain black skirt of the same size.
Q. Will the white trim stay white?

You are not, ready-to-wear is. Skirts are cut to one fixed waist-to-hip ratio, so if yours is different, the waist gapes or the hips pull and the skirt rides up. We cut your waist and your hip independently to your own measurements, so the skirt sits level with no gap and skims the hip without riding, and you confirm exactly that on the free test garment before the final skirt is made.
I can never walk comfortably in a fitted skirt. Will this be different?
Yes. A tailored pencil skirt is cut with a back vent, split, or kick pleat that gives you real stride room for walking and stairs, and with enough ease through the hip to sit down comfortably. When you try the free test garment, take a few steps and sit, and if you want more walking room we simply add it before the final skirt is cut.
I have never bought a skirt I could not try on first. How do I know it will fit?
Because you do try it on first. We make a free test skirt in a stand-in cloth to your measurements and post it to you. You put it on, walk, sit, and check the waist, hips, and length, then send us notes and photos. Only once you are happy do we cut your final cloth, so the finished skirt is a fit you have already approved.
I am nervous I will measure my waist or hips wrong.
You do not have to be exact. Our guide walks you through each measurement, a friend or a local tailor can help, and if you are unsure you can send your best numbers. The free test garment catches anything slightly off, we see the skirt on your body and adjust, so a first-try measurement is completely normal.
I struggle to find any skirt that flatters my shape. Is custom-made really for me?
It is made for exactly you. A small waist with fuller hips, or the reverse, a longer or shorter body, these are the shapes off-the-rack fails and custom-made tailoring fits best, because we cut to your proportions rather than a size. You also choose the length that flatters you, cut to your height, so nothing is left to chance.
What if it arrives and something is not quite right?
The final skirt is cut to the exact fit you approved on the test garment, so surprises are rare by design. If a small tweak is ever needed, the finished skirt carries seam allowances at the waist and seat so a local tailor can fine-tune it, and you can always contact us and we will help make it right.
What if my size changes later?
Your finished skirt is made with seam allowances, so a local tailor can take it in or let it out at the waist and seat within reason. And we keep your measurements on record, so ordering another skirt that fits is simple whenever you want one.
