Knitted to order in the same workshop as the scarves, from the same Grade A Himalayan fiber. Three shapes, and the real difference between them is where the shoulder sits — the same decision we make on every jacket. Cashmere has almost no recovery, so a sweater worn tight stretches rather than springing back. These are cut with that in mind.

    Why Cheap Cashmere Sweaters Pill and Ours Do Not

    A cashmere sweater fails in one of two ways: it pills into a fuzzy mess, or it goes thin at the elbows and cuffs. Both have the same cause — short fiber. Grade B and C cashmere has a staple too short to hold securely in the yarn, so the fiber ends work loose with movement, tangle into pills, and gradually leave the garment altogether.

    These are hand-knitted from the same 14 to 16 micron, 35 to 55mm staple Grade A fiber we weave the scarves from. Long staple stays put. That is the entire difference, and it is why a good cashmere sweater gets softer over twenty years while a cheap one looks tired by February.

    The Three Shapes

    Which cut suits how you wear it

    Cable knit turtleneck
    The heaviest of the three. Cable knitting uses more yarn per square inch than a plain knit, which makes it warmer and gives it structure, so it holds its shape through a winter of wear. Cut conventionally, with the shoulder seam at the shoulder.

    Dropped-shoulder boxy crew
    The seam sits visibly down the upper arm rather than at the joint — that is the point of the cut, not a fit error. It produces a relaxed line and more room through the body. Do not size down; cashmere has very little recovery and a tight fit will stretch at the elbows.

    Classic turtleneck
    The plainest and most versatile — the one that layers under a jacket without bulk at the shoulder. If you are buying your first cashmere sweater and want it to work with everything you already own, start here.

    Questions & Answers

    Questions about cashmere sweaters

    Q. Should I wash or dry clean a cashmere sweater?
    A. Wash it. Dry cleaning solvents strip the natural lanolin that keeps cashmere supple, which is why frequently dry-cleaned knitwear starts to feel papery. Hand wash in cool water with a gentle shampoo, do not wring, press the water out in a towel, and dry flat. Cashmere genuinely improves with washing — the fibers bloom and the handle softens. This is the opposite of what most retailers advise, and it is the correct advice.

    Q. Will it pill at all?
    A. Lightly, in the first few wears, in high-friction areas — under the arms and where a bag strap sits. That is loose surface fiber shedding, and it stops. Remove it with a cashmere comb, never a razor. What should not happen is continued pilling after the first month, or pills forming across the whole garment. That indicates short fiber, and it is not what Grade A does.

    Our hand-felted wraps start the same way these sweaters do, hand-knitted from the same fiber — then they are felted until the stitches close.

    Q. How should it fit?
    A. True to size, and never tight. Cashmere has very little elastic recovery compared with wool, so a sweater worn tight will stretch permanently at the elbows and hem rather than springing back. If you are between sizes, take the larger — particularly in the dropped-shoulder cut, which is designed to sit loose through the body.

    Q. How do I store cashmere over summer?
    A. Wash it before storing, always. Moths are attracted to skin oils and food traces, not to clean fiber, so a sweater put away dirty is the one that comes out with holes. Fold rather than hang — hanging stretches the shoulders over months — and store in a breathable cotton bag rather than plastic, which traps moisture. Cedar works; mothballs make the garment smell for years.

    Q. Can a sweater be personalized?
    A. Yes — initials at the cuff or inside the neck, or a custom woven label for private-label orders. Because sweaters are knitted to order rather than cut from stock, we can also match a specific color from our 350 hand-dyed shades.
