How to Take Your Own Measurements for a Perfect Fit
All you need is a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help with the shoulder and back measurements. Wear close-fitting clothing so the tape sits against your body, stand naturally with your weight even on both feet, and keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger. Stand straight with your arms relaxed and wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, keeping it level and snug with room for one finger.

Frequently asked questions about measuring yourself
How do I measure my bust, waist and length for a custom garment?
Use a flexible tape. For the bust, wrap it around the fullest part with the tape level. For the waist, measure the narrowest part, usually just above the belly button. For length, measure from the shoulder or natural waist down to your desired hem. Keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger, and measure over close-fitting clothing rather than bulky layers.
How do I measure my waist, hips, thighs and rise?
Measure the waist at the narrowest point, the hips around the widest part of your hips and seat, and the thigh around the fullest part of the upper leg. For the rise, sit down and measure from the front of your natural waist, down between your legs to the seat. Keep the tape level and snug throughout.
Where can I get my measurements taken?
Any local tailor or seamstress can take your measurements in a few minutes, and many fabric or bridal shops offer measuring too. You can also measure yourself at home with a flexible tape using this guide, or have a friend help with the back and shoulder measurements. Because we send a free test garment before cutting your final cloth, the fit is confirmed on your body regardless of who takes the first measurements.
What do I need to measure myself?
Just a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help with the shoulder and back measurements. Wear close-fitting clothing so the tape sits against your body, and stand naturally with your weight even on both feet.
How tight should the measuring tape be?
Snug but not tight. The tape should sit flat against your body with just enough room to slip one finger underneath. Pulling it too tight gives measurements that are too small, and leaving it loose makes the garment baggy.
What if my measurements are not perfect?
That is exactly why we send a free test garment. Give us your best measurements, and we build a test version in a stand-in cloth to your numbers and ship it to you. You try it on, we adjust from there, and nothing is cut in your final fabric until the fit is confirmed.

The Skirt
Women’s Below the Knee Pencil Skirt, Cut to Your Length
A below the knee pencil skirt is the one skirt where an inch decides everything. Stop it at the widest part of the calf and it shortens the leg; end it just under the knee, where the leg narrows, and it looks long and deliberate. Ready-made skirts pick one length for every height. This one is cut to the length you choose, in Super 160s worsted wool with a 2 inch tall waistband.
Inside that waistband is a grip that keeps a tucked blouse in place through a day of standing, sitting and reaching, and the waistband itself is lined in cotton. The skirt closes with a hidden center back zipper, opens at a center back vent sized for the longer hem, and is fully lined in satin. It has no pockets. It is a pencil cut skirt below the knee, not an A-line, so the line stays close from hip to hem.

Before the wool is cut, we make the skirt in cotton from your measurements and send it to you free, to keep. It has no lining; the satin you choose goes into the final skirt.
On a below knee length skirt, the test skirt is where the hem finds its place. Put on the shoes you will wear with it, look in a long mirror and mark where the skirt should end: an inch higher or lower is easy to see on the body and hard to guess on a tape. We also check that the vent opens enough for a full stride at that length, and that the tall waistband sits flat at the waist without folding when you sit.

Below the knee skirts cover a wide band, from just under the kneecap to mid-calf, and the same word means different things on different heights. In our photos the hem sits just below the knee. These are the three lengths clients ask us for most, and what each does:

The pencil skirt back is where a longer hem shows its fit. In this pencil skirt back view, the waistband runs level, the zipper falls straight down the center and the vent stays closed while standing. Questions About the Below the Knee Pencil Skirt
Q. Where should a below the knee skirt end?
A. For most women, just below the knee, where the leg starts to narrow, is the most flattering point, and it is the length in our photos. Mid-calf works too but asks for a heel or boot. Give your length on the measurement form and check it on the free test skirt with your own shoes.
Q. Is a below knee pencil skirt hard to walk in?
A. Not if the vent is right. The longer the skirt, the more the vent matters, so we lengthen it with the hem and check your stride on the test skirt. A pencil skirt below knee length with too short a vent is what makes people shuffle.
Q. What is the difference between a midi and a below the knee skirt?
A. Below the knee usually means just under the kneecap; midi usually means mid-calf. Brands use the words loosely, which is why we ask for a measurement instead of a size.

A. It is fine and smooth, so treat it gently: hang it on a clip hanger, brush it, and rest it a day between wears. For a skirt it wears well, because a skirt sees far less rubbing than trouser knees or jacket elbows. Dry clean only.
Q. Is the test skirt really free?
A. Yes. It is cut in cotton from your measurements, sent at no charge, and yours to keep. It has no lining; your satin lining goes into the final skirt.
Q. How long will it take?
A. The test skirt takes 3 to 4 weeks to make and arrives 5 to 10 days after dispatch; once you approve the fit, your wool skirt takes 3 to 4 weeks and arrives 5 to 10 days after dispatch. Order as early as you can if you have a date in mind.

The doubts most women have, and why you can relax
Pencil skirts always ride up or gape at my waist. Am I just hard to fit?
You are not, ready-to-wear is. Skirts are cut to one fixed waist-to-hip ratio, so if yours is different, the waist gapes or the hips pull and the skirt rides up. We cut your waist and your hip independently to your own measurements, so the skirt sits level with no gap and skims the hip without riding, and you confirm exactly that on the free test garment before the final skirt is made.
I can never walk comfortably in a fitted skirt. Will this be different?
Yes. A tailored pencil skirt is cut with a back vent, split, or kick pleat that gives you real stride room for walking and stairs, and with enough ease through the hip to sit down comfortably. When you try the free test garment, take a few steps and sit, and if you want more walking room we simply add it before the final skirt is cut.
I have never bought a skirt I could not try on first. How do I know it will fit?
Because you do try it on first. We make a free test skirt in a stand-in cloth to your measurements and post it to you. You put it on, walk, sit, and check the waist, hips, and length, then send us notes and photos. Only once you are happy do we cut your final cloth, so the finished skirt is a fit you have already approved.
I am nervous I will measure my waist or hips wrong.
You do not have to be exact. Our guide walks you through each measurement, a friend or a local tailor can help, and if you are unsure you can send your best numbers. The free test garment catches anything slightly off, we see the skirt on your body and adjust, so a first-try measurement is completely normal.
I struggle to find any skirt that flatters my shape. Is custom-made really for me?
It is made for exactly you. A small waist with fuller hips, or the reverse, a longer or shorter body, these are the shapes off-the-rack fails and custom-made tailoring fits best, because we cut to your proportions rather than a size. You also choose the length that flatters you, cut to your height, so nothing is left to chance.
What if it arrives and something is not quite right?
The final skirt is cut to the exact fit you approved on the test garment, so surprises are rare by design. If a small tweak is ever needed, the finished skirt carries seam allowances at the waist and seat so a local tailor can fine-tune it, and you can always contact us and we will help make it right.
What if my size changes later?
Your finished skirt is made with seam allowances, so a local tailor can take it in or let it out at the waist and seat within reason. And we keep your measurements on record, so ordering another skirt that fits is simple whenever you want one.
