How to Take Your Own Measurements for a Perfect Fit
All you need is a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help with the shoulder and back measurements. Wear close-fitting clothing so the tape sits against your body, stand naturally with your weight even on both feet, and keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger. Below is every measurement we may ask for. You do not have to get each number perfect: we send a free test garment before cutting your final cloth, so the fit is confirmed on your body first.

How do I measure my bust, waist and length for a custom garment?
Use a flexible tape. For the bust, wrap it around the fullest part with the tape level. For the waist, measure the narrowest part, usually just above the belly button. For length, measure from the shoulder or natural waist down to your desired hem. Keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger, and measure over close-fitting clothing rather than bulky layers.
How do I measure my waist, hips, thighs and rise?

For the rise, sit down and measure from the front of your natural waist, down between your legs to the seat. Keep the tape level and snug throughout.
Where can I get my measurements taken?
Any local tailor or seamstress can take your measurements in a few minutes, and many fabric or bridal shops offer measuring too. You can also measure yourself at home with a flexible tape using this guide, or have a friend help with the back and shoulder measurements. Because we send a free test garment before cutting your final cloth, the fit is confirmed on your body regardless of who takes the first measurements.
What do I need to measure myself?

How tight should the measuring tape be?

That is exactly why we send a free test garment. Give us your best measurements, and we build a test version in a stand-in cloth to your numbers and ship it to you. You try it on, we adjust from there, and nothing is cut in your final fabric until the fit is confirmed.

A dress is the hardest thing to buy off the rack, because it has to fit the bust, the waist, the hip, and the length all at the same time, and almost no one is a single standard size in all four. So you settle: a dress that fits the bust but hangs at the waist, or fits the waist but strains across the hip, or is always an inch too long or too short. A custom-made dress ends the compromise. There are no standard sizes, we cut it to your measurements everywhere at once, and before we cut your final cloth we send you a free test garment so the fit is proven on your body first. This page answers the worries that come with ordering a dress you cannot try on yet.
How It Should Sit

Bust & neckline
The bodice shapes cleanly around your bust with no pulling and no gap, and the neckline sits flat against you rather than gaping forward when you lean. Cut to your bust, not an average.

Your Worries, Answered
The doubts most women have, and why you can relax
Dresses never fit my bust and my waist at the same time. Am I just an awkward shape?
You are not, ready-to-wear is the problem. A dress off the rack is cut to one fixed bust-to-waist-to-hip ratio, so if yours is different, something always fits wrong no matter which size you buy. We cut your bust, waist, and hip to your own measurements, so all of them fit at once, and you confirm exactly that on the free test garment before your final cloth is cut. A great many women have spent years thinking they were the problem; they never were.
My dresses always gape at the neckline or the bust. Will this fix it?
Yes, directly. Gaping happens when the bodice is cut for an average bust and neckline, not yours. We shape the bodice with darts and cut it to your bust and chest, so the neckline sits flat and the front closes smoothly with no gap or strain, and if the free test garment shows even a hint of pull, we correct it before the final dress is made.
I have never bought a dress I could not try on first. How do I know it will fit?
Because you do try it on first. After you send your measurements, we make a free test dress in a stand-in cloth to those numbers and post it to you. You put it on, sit, move, check the bust, waist, hip, and length, and send us your notes and a couple of photos. Only once you are happy do we cut your final cloth, so the finished dress is a fit you have already seen and approved, not a gamble.
The length is always wrong on me. Can you get it right?
Yes. Because the hem is cut to your height, not to a standard size chart, you get the exact length you want, on the knee, midi, or full length, with the proportion balanced for your frame. Tell us the look and the shoe height you have in mind, and the test garment lets you confirm the length on your own body before the final dress is cut.
I have an occasion coming up and I am terrified it will not be right on the day.
Tell us the date when you order and we plan the timeline back from it, including the free test-garment stage, so there is time to confirm the fit and make any adjustments with room to spare. For a wedding or dated event we recommend ordering two to three months ahead. Because you approve the fit before the final dress is cut, you walk into your occasion knowing it fits, not hoping.
A silk or fitted dress worries me, I do not want it clinging in the wrong places.
A well-cut dress should skim and drape, not cling, and that comes down to the fit through the bust, waist, and hip, which we cut to you. Silk and fitted styles are actually less forgiving of a poor fit, so this is exactly where being custom made matters most, and the test garment lets you confirm the drape and the skim before we cut into the final cloth.
It feels like a lot to spend on a dress made just for me. What is my safety net?
Nothing final is cut until you have approved the fit on the free test garment, so you are not gambling on a dress you have never seen on your body. And a dress that finally fits everywhere gets worn again and again, especially for occasions, so it tends to cost far less per wear than the almost-right dresses that sit unworn in the wardrobe.
What if my size changes before the event, or afterwards?
Take your measurements as close to the event as you can, and if your size shifts before we cut the final cloth we simply adjust to your new numbers. Afterwards, the finished dress is made with seam allowances so a local tailor can take it in or let it out within reason, and we keep your measurements on record for any future pieces.
