In person – especially at the event they were bought for – they read flat, shapeless, or worse, like a costume. The problem is not silk. Why dupioni photographs differently from any other fabric
Dupioni is woven from the reeled thread of two silkworms whose cocoons merge during spinning. The result is a natural horizontal slub – an irregular crosswise texture that cannot be replicated in plain-weave or synthetic silk. It is this slub that gives dupioni its directional light response: the cloth holds light differently at every angle, which is why it does not look the same in two photographs taken at the same event from different positions. A note on slub direction. Every dupioni suit in the market runs the slub horizontally – the texture crosses the body.
