Our men’s scarves are 100% Grade A cashmere at 22 × 72 inches in over 80 colors — a width we settled on by testing it under coat collars we had made ourselves. The pashmina shawl is the finer undercoat of the Changthangi goat, hand-spun at 200/2 and woven over five days at 36 × 80 inches, in 90 colors at one price.

    Most Shawls Sold to Men as “Pashmina” Are Not Pashmina

    Pashmina is not a style, a size, or a level of softness. It is a specific fiber: the fine undercoat of the Changthangi goat, which lives above 14,000 feet where the cold forces it to grow an undercoat fine enough that it cannot be machine-harvested without breaking. It is combed by hand in spring. That is the entire definition, and almost everything sold under the name fails it.

    What is usually sold as a men’s pashmina is viscose, acrylic, a wool blend, or cashmere blended down to a price. Ours is 100% Grade A pashmina, hand-spun to a 200/2 count and handwoven over five days at 36 × 80 inches, in 90 colors at a single price. Our men’s cashmere scarves are a separate product at 22 × 72 inches in over 80 colors — and we do not call those pashmina, because they are not.

    Choosing

    Which width, and which piece

    22 × 72 in — the everyday scarf
    The standard men’s proportion. Narrow enough to sit flat under a coat collar without bulking the neckline, long enough to loop once and tuck, or twice in real cold. Over 80 colors. Choose this if you wear a coat daily and want cashmere that disappears into the outfit rather than announcing itself. Graded and de-haired for next-to-skin wear.

    Extra-long neck wrap
    The same 100% cashmere and the same 80+ color range, cut longer. Worth choosing if you are tall, or if you have ever found a standard scarf ends awkwardly short after a second wrap.

    36 × 80 in pashmina shawl
    Substantially wider. Worn open across the shoulders in the traditional way, folded lengthwise as a heavy scarf, or across the body. This is a formal and ceremonial piece as much as a cold-weather one, and it is the format most often bought for weddings and for gifting. 90 colors, one price across all of them.

    Glen plaid, if you want pattern
    Tan and white houndstooth in a woven glen plaid — woven, not printed, so the pattern reads on both faces. It is the one patterned men’s piece we make, because a woven check is the only pattern that reads correctly at scarf width. Anything busier fights the coat.

    The Craft

    From goat to shawl

    1

    Combed, not shorn

    The undercoat is combed out by hand in spring as the goats moult. Shearing would cut the coarse outer guard hair in with the fine undercoat, which is exactly what produces the scratchy “pashmina” most people have encountered.

    Hand-spun to 200/2

    Two ultra-fine singles twisted together — our finest count. Machine spinning at this fineness breaks the staple, so mills spin pashmina thicker or blend it with wool to survive the process, and then still call it pashmina.

    Five days on a handloom

    One weaver, one loom, one piece at a time in our Kathmandu workshop, finished with hand-knotted fringe at both ends. We have worked with the same workshop for twenty-five years.

    Questions about men’s cashmere and pashmina

    Q. Is pashmina the same as cashmere?
    A. All pashmina is cashmere, but very little cashmere is pashmina. Cashmere is the general term for the fine undercoat of any cashmere goat. Pashmina refers specifically to the finest grade of that undercoat, from the Changthangi goat of the high Himalaya, traditionally hand-spun and handwoven. The relationship is like champagne and sparkling wine — one is a subset of the other, defined by origin and method rather than by a quality claim.

    Q. How can I check whether a pashmina is real before buying?
    A. Ask three questions any honest seller can answer instantly: what is the micron count, what is the yarn count, and where was it woven. Real pashmina runs roughly 14 to 16 microns at a 200/2 hand-spun count. If the answer is vague, it is a blend. Then check the ends — hand-loomed pieces have hand-knotted fringe, while machine-made ones are cut or serged.

    Q. Will cashmere itch?
    A. Grade A cashmere at 14 to 16 microns should not. Itch is a function of fiber diameter — anything much above 22 microns is felt by most people as prickle, which is why lambswool and coarse blends irritate. It is also caused by guard hair left in during processing. Our men’s scarves are graded and de-haired specifically for next-to-skin wear, which is why they are described as non-irritating rather than simply soft.

    Q. Which is the better gift, the scarf or the shawl?
    A. The 22 × 72 scarf if he wears a coat to work — it gets used daily and sits invisibly under a collar. The 36 × 80 pashmina shawl if the occasion is formal, ceremonial, or a wedding, where it is worn visibly and reads as a significant piece. If you are unsure, the scarf is the safer gift and the shawl is the more memorable one.

    Q. Can men’s pieces be monogrammed?
    A. Yes. Initials on the tail of a scarf just above the fringe is the traditional placement and the least conspicuous, visible only when the scarf hangs open. We can also embroider a full name, a date, or a company logo. Groomsmen’s sets are one of the most common orders we take.

    Q. Do all 90 colors cost the same?
    A. Yes. Every color in the pashmina range is one price, including deep saturated shades that take more dye passes. We hold over 350 hand-dyed shades in total, so if the color you need is not among the standard 90 we can usually match it — including to a Pantone reference for corporate orders.
