A Kick Pleat Skirt Cut to Your Waist and Hips
A pencil skirt is judged in motion. Standing still, almost any straight skirt looks neat. Then you take a long step, climb a stair or get out of a car, and a skirt cut for someone else’s hips either pulls tight across the seat or rides up with every stride. Most women deal with it by buying a size up and living with a skirt that is loose at the waist.
This kick pleat skirt starts from your measurements. The waist, hips and length are cut for you, so the skirt follows your shape without gripping it. A deep kick pleat at the center front opens as you walk and closes when you stand, which gives you the stride of a looser skirt with the clean line of a pencil skirt.
The cloth is Super 160s worsted wool in a plain weave from Vitale Barberis Canonico, a mill in northern Italy that has been weaving since 1663. It is fine and smooth, it drapes rather than clings, and it keeps its line through a long day at a desk. The waistband is 1.5 inches tall, lined in cotton and fitted with a grip on the inside, so a blouse stays tucked in when you move.
The details are yours to decide. The waistband can be a contrasting color, as in the photo, or match the skirt. The pleat sits at the front as standard, and you can ask for it at the back instead. The length is set by the measurement you give us, whether that is just above the knee or well below it.
What Is a Kick Pleat Skirt?
A kick pleat skirt is a narrow skirt with a short, folded pleat at the hem that opens when you step and closes when you stand. The pleat is backed by a panel of the same cloth, so it gives your legs room to move without opening to show the leg. That is what separates it from the other two ways tailors add walking room to a straight skirt.
Kick Pleat
A folded pleat backed with fabric. It opens only as far as your stride needs and shows cloth, not skin, when it does. The most discreet choice for the office.
Vent
Two edges of the skirt that overlap, like the vent on the back of a jacket. It opens further than a kick pleat and can gape when you sit.
Slit
An open cut in the hem with nothing behind it. It gives the most room and shows the most leg, which is why it tends to be kept for evening skirts.
Most kick pleats sit at the back of the skirt, where they stay out of sight. We place ours at the center front, where it becomes a design detail as well as a practical one: a sharp vertical line that runs down from the waistband and makes the skirt look longer and leaner. A kick pleat only hangs straight when the skirt fits. If the hips are too tight, the pleat is pulled open even while you stand still. If they are too loose, it twists to one side. So before we cut your wool, we make the whole skirt in cotton, to your measurements, and send it to you.

A pencil skirt is only as good as three measurements, the waist, the hip, and the length, and off-the-rack rarely gets all three right on one body. A custom-made skirt does. You choose the length and the fit, we cut the waist and hip to your measurements, and a free test garment confirms it on you before your final cloth is cut. This guide covers the fits and where a tailored skirt should sit.

Slim / Pencil
Closely follows the waist, hip, and thigh for a sharp, tailored line. The classic work-skirt silhouette, cut with a vent or split so you can still walk freely.
Standard (Classic) Fit
Skims the hip with a little more ease than a true pencil, comfortable for all-day wear while keeping a clean, tailored shape.
Relaxed / A-line
Fitted at the waist and easing gently over the hip, for more movement and a softer line that flatters most figures.

Your Worries, Answered
The doubts most women have, and why you can relax
Pencil skirts always ride up or gape at my waist. Am I just hard to fit?
You are not, ready-to-wear is. Skirts are cut to one fixed waist-to-hip ratio, so if yours is different, the waist gapes or the hips pull and the skirt rides up. We cut your waist and your hip independently to your own measurements, so the skirt sits level with no gap and skims the hip without riding, and you confirm exactly that on the free test garment before the final skirt is made.
I can never walk comfortably in a fitted skirt. Will this be different?
Yes. A tailored pencil skirt is cut with a back vent, split, or kick pleat that gives you real stride room for walking and stairs, and with enough ease through the hip to sit down comfortably. When you try the free test garment, take a few steps and sit, and if you want more walking room we simply add it before the final skirt is cut.
I have never bought a skirt I could not try on first. How do I know it will fit?
Because you do try it on first. We make a free test skirt in a stand-in cloth to your measurements and post it to you. You put it on, walk, sit, and check the waist, hips, and length, then send us notes and photos. Only once you are happy do we cut your final cloth, so the finished skirt is a fit you have already approved.
I am nervous I will measure my waist or hips wrong.
You do not have to be exact. Our guide walks you through each measurement, a friend or a local tailor can help, and if you are unsure you can send your best numbers. The free test garment catches anything slightly off, we see the skirt on your body and adjust, so a first-try measurement is completely normal.
I struggle to find any skirt that flatters my shape. Is custom-made really for me?
It is made for exactly you. A small waist with fuller hips, or the reverse, a longer or shorter body, these are the shapes off-the-rack fails and custom-made tailoring fits best, because we cut to your proportions rather than a size. You also choose the length that flatters you, cut to your height, so nothing is left to chance.
What if it arrives and something is not quite right?
The final skirt is cut to the exact fit you approved on the test garment, so surprises are rare by design. If a small tweak is ever needed, the finished skirt carries seam allowances at the waist and seat so a local tailor can fine-tune it, and you can always contact us and we will help make it right.
What if my size changes later?
Your finished skirt is made with seam allowances, so a local tailor can take it in or let it out at the waist and seat within reason. And we keep your measurements on record, so ordering another skirt that fits is simple whenever you want one.
