Wear close-fitting clothing so the tape sits against your body, stand naturally with your weight even on both feet, and keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger. Below is every measurement we may ask for. You do not have to get each number perfect: we send a free test garment before cutting your final cloth, so the fit is confirmed on your body first.

Bust circumference
Stand straight with your arms relaxed and wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, keeping it level and snug with room for one finger.

4
Hips and seat
Stand with your feet together and measure around the widest part of your hips and seat, keeping the tape level.
5

Measure around the fullest part of your upper thigh, keeping the tape snug with room for one finger.

Measure from the highest point of the crotch down the inside of your leg to the same hem point used for the trouser length measurement.
8
Outseam and trouser length

Questions & Answers
Frequently asked questions about measuring yourself
How do I measure my bust, waist and length for a custom garment?
Use a flexible tape. For the bust, wrap it around the fullest part with the tape level. For the waist, measure the narrowest part, usually just above the belly button. For length, measure from the shoulder or natural waist down to your desired hem. Keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger, and measure over close-fitting clothing rather than bulky layers.
How do I measure my waist, hips, thighs and rise?
Measure the waist at the narrowest point, the hips around the widest part of your hips and seat, and the thigh around the fullest part of the upper leg. For the rise, sit down and measure from the front of your natural waist, down between your legs to the seat. Keep the tape level and snug throughout.
Where can I get my measurements taken?
Any local tailor or seamstress can take your measurements in a few minutes, and many fabric or bridal shops offer measuring too. You can also measure yourself at home with a flexible tape using this guide, or have a friend help with the back and shoulder measurements. Because we send a free test garment before cutting your final cloth, the fit is confirmed on your body regardless of who takes the first measurements.
What do I need to measure myself?
Just a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help with the shoulder and back measurements. Wear close-fitting clothing so the tape sits against your body, and stand naturally with your weight even on both feet.
How tight should the measuring tape be?
Snug but not tight. The tape should sit flat against your body with just enough room to slip one finger underneath. Pulling it too tight gives measurements that are too small, and leaving it loose makes the garment baggy.
What if my measurements are not perfect?
That is exactly why we send a free test garment. Give us your best measurements, and we build a test version in a stand-in cloth to your numbers and ship it to you. You try it on, we adjust from there, and nothing is cut in your final fabric until the fit is confirmed.

A Women’s Peacoat Built for Wind, Not Just for Looks
The peacoat was cut for sailors standing watch in wind off the sea. Many fashion peacoats sold today are not built for a cold bus stop: thin wool, a collar that will not close, buttons that are only for show. This women’s peacoat goes back to the original job. It is double-breasted in dense Melton wool of about 450 to 500 gsm, with a buttoned neck tab that closes the collar against the wind.
It is cut to your measurements with a canvas front, a half belt across the back and a mid-thigh length, and settled first in a free test coat, so the double-breasted front sits flat instead of gaping.

Price: $599 Cloth: 100% Melton wool, about 450 to 500 gsm Lining: satin, chosen in the selector Length: mid-thigh Test coat: free, yours to keep Care: dry clean
Free Test Coat
A Double-Breasted Front Has Nowhere to Hide
A double-breasted coat overlaps across the body, so a fit that is slightly off shows at once: the front pulls into an X, or the inner button drags. That is why every peacoat starts as a cotton test coat, checked over a sweater, before the Melton is cut.
1
Choose your cloth and lining, then enter your measurements
Pick your cloth color and satin lining in the selector, then enter your measurements on the product page, with the length you want. Any style change goes in the comment box on the measurement form.
2
We make your free test coat
A test coat in cotton, cut to your measurements, takes 3 to 4 weeks to make and arrives 5 to 10 days after dispatch by trackable courier.
3
You try it on at home
Check the shoulders, the sleeve length, the button point and the length over the clothes you will wear underneath, and tell us any change, however small.
4
We make the final coat
We apply every change, then make the final coat in Melton wool in 3 to 4 weeks; it arrives 5 to 10 days after dispatch. The test coat is yours to keep.
Built for Wind
What Makes a Wool Pea Coat for Women Warm
Melton is a dense wool cloth that is milled after weaving, so the surface closes up, feels smooth and stops the wind instead of letting it through the gaps between the threads. Ours weighs about 450 to 500 gsm, a true winter coat weight.
Buttoned neck tab
Closes the collar up to the chin, as in the photo, so wind cannot get down your neck.
Double-breasted front
Two layers of Melton across the chest instead of one.
Eight buttons, four fastening
The classic peacoat front, with black horn buttons hand-stitched and reinforced.
Half belt at the back
Draws in the waist so the coat does not fill with air.
So this is not a lightweight peacoat. If you want a lightweight peacoat for spring, ask about a lighter cloth in the comment box on the measurement form.
How It Should Fit
How Should a Peacoat Fit a Woman?
Side
Mid-thigh, just covering the hip, with a flap hip pocket.
Back
The peacoat back: a buttoned half belt and a center vent.
Shoulders
The seam sits at the edge of your shoulder, with room for a sweater but no dip down the arm.
Front
Buttoned, the overlap lies flat with no X-shaped pull across the bust.
Sleeves
Long enough to cover a sweater cuff when your arms are bent.
Length
Mid-thigh, which many call a women’s 3/4 length peacoat; any length can be cut.
Pea coat women’s sizing in shops is cut for an average figure, which is why the double-breasted front so often gapes. Here it is cut to you, and checked in the test coat.
Turquoise and Teal
A Turquoise Peacoat, or Another Melton Color
The coat in the photos is our turquoise Melton, which is why this page is found by people looking for a turquoise pea coat. Teal Melton is offered too, for a teal peacoat or a teal pea coat that reads darker and greener.

Back
Half belt with buttons, center vent
Cuffs
Five-button vented cuffs

Questions & Answers
Questions About the Women’s Peacoat
Q. How should a peacoat fit a woman?
A. The shoulder seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder, the double-breasted front should lie flat when buttoned, and there should be room for a sweater underneath. The sleeves should cover a sweater cuff when your arms are bent.
Q. How warm is this peacoat?
A. Very warm, because it is dense Melton wool of about 450 to 500 gsm, double layered across the chest. The buttoned neck tab closes the collar against wind.
Q. Is it a lightweight peacoat?
A. No, it is a winter weight. A lighter cloth can be requested in the comment box on the measurement form.
Q. What length is it?
A. It is mid-thigh, often called a 3/4 length peacoat. Enter a different length on the measurement form if you want it longer or shorter.
Q. Does it come in turquoise or teal?
A. Yes, the photos show turquoise Melton, and teal is also offered in the same Melton.
Q. What is the difference between a pea coat and a peacoat?
A. None, they are the same coat spelled two ways. Women’s peacoats are usually cut shorter and more fitted than men’s.
Q. How does the free test coat work?
A. We make the coat in cotton to your measurements, you try it at home over a sweater and tell us any change, and then we cut the Melton. The test coat is yours to keep.
Q. How long does it take?
A. The test coat takes 3 to 4 weeks to make and arrives 5 to 10 days after dispatch. The final coat takes another 3 to 4 weeks and arrives 5 to 10 days after dispatch, so order as early as you can before you need it.
Q. Can I change details, such as the length?
A. Yes, enter the length you want on the measurement form and write any other change in its comment box, such as sleeve length or pocket style. For anything else, use the Ask a question about this piece form below Add to Cart.
Q. How do I care for it?
A. Dry clean only, and not often. Brush the Melton after wearing and hang it on a shaped hanger.

A Coat Made to Fit You, and Everything You Wear Under It
A coat is a bigger commitment than most garments, you wear it over everything, everyone sees it, and it usually costs more, so it is natural to feel more nervous ordering one made to your measurements. The most common fear is simple: will it be roomy enough over a jumper, but still shaped and not a sack? With a made-to-measure coat you do not have to choose. There are no standard sizes, we cut it to your measurements with the right ease built in for layering, and a free test garment confirms the fit, over your usual layers, before your final cloth is cut. This page answers the worries that come with buying a coat you cannot try on yet.
How It Should Sit
The fit checkpoints, so you know what “right” looks like
Room for layers
A coat is cut with more ease than a jacket so it closes comfortably over a jumper or blazer without straining, while still keeping a shaped, tailored line rather than hanging like a box.
Shoulders
The shoulder seam sits at or just past the edge of your shoulder to allow for layers underneath, with no pulling. This is cut precisely to you.
Length
Your choice, from a cropped or mid-thigh cut to a full-length coat, drafted to your height so the proportion is right for your frame.
Sleeves
Cut a touch longer than a jacket so they cover your wrist and a shirt or jumper cuff, and sit correctly when your arms are down.
Every coat is made to your measurements with the ease built in for layering, in the length and fit you choose. A free test garment lets you confirm the fit over your usual layers before your final cloth is cut, and it is yours to keep.
Your Worries, Answered
The doubts most women have, and why you can relax
I am worried a custom-made coat will be too tight over my jumpers.
This is the most common coat worry, and it is exactly what we plan for. A coat is cut with more ease than a jacket precisely so it closes comfortably over your layers, and when you try the free test garment we ask you to put it on over the jumper or blazer you would normally wear underneath. If it feels at all snug, we add room before the final cloth is cut, so the finished coat is never tight over your usual layers.
A coat is a big spend. What if it arrives and it is wrong?
Nothing final, and nothing costly, is cut until you have approved the fit on the free test garment. You are not gambling a large sum on a coat you have never seen on your body; you are confirming the fit on a test version first, over your layers, and only then do we cut the real cloth. That is the whole point of the process, to take the risk out of the biggest, most visible piece in your wardrobe.
I have never been able to find a coat that fits my shoulders and my shape at once.
That is precisely who custom-made is for. Off-the-rack coats are cut to an average frame, so if your shoulders, bust, or height are not average, something is always wrong. We cut the shoulders, body, and length to your own measurements, so the coat fits your frame rather than a size, and the test garment confirms it before we commit to the final cloth.
I am nervous about measuring myself for something this important.
You do not need to get it perfect. Our guide takes you through each measurement, a friend or a local tailor can help, and you measure over light clothing so we can allow for layers ourselves. The free test garment is there to catch anything that is slightly off, we see the coat on your body and adjust, so a first-try measurement is completely fine.
How do I choose the right length without seeing it on?
Tell us the look you want, cropped, mid-thigh, knee, or full-length, and we draft it to your height so the proportion suits your frame. If you are unsure, a length that ends around the mid-thigh or knee flatters most people. The test garment then lets you see the length on your body and change it before the final coat is cut, so you are never guessing.
Will a fitted coat still look shaped, or will it end up boxy to fit the layers?
It stays shaped. We build in enough room for layers while still cutting a waist and a clean line, so the coat reads as tailored, not as a box. You choose how close or relaxed you want it, and the test garment lets you confirm that balance of room and shape on your own body.
What if my size changes, or I want to wear it over heavier layers in future?
Coats carry generous seam allowances, so a local tailor can adjust the body within reason if your shape changes. And because we cut with layering in mind and keep your measurements on record, you can tell us up front if you plan to wear it over heavy knits, and we allow for it.
The whole custom process feels intimidating. What actually happens?
It is simpler than it sounds. You choose the coat, cloth, and length and send your measurements; we make a free test garment and post it to you; you try it on over your layers and send notes and photos; we adjust and then cut and hand-tailor your final coat; and it ships to you with tracking. At no point are you committing to a finished coat you have not already seen fit on your body.
Chosen your fit? Browse women’s outwear, or message us with any questions. We build the free test garment first to confirm the fit on your body, and it is yours to keep.
