Follow these simple steps to ensure your custom garment fits you perfectly. All you need is a flexible measuring tape.
Measure across your back from the edge of one shoulder to the edge of the other, keeping the tape flat.
Measure from the edge of your shoulder, along the outside of your relaxed arm, to your desired sleeve length.
Measure around the armhole where the sleeve joins the body. Pass the tape from the top of the shoulder, under the armpit, and back to the starting point. Keep the tape comfortably snug. Measure over a lightweight shirt or close-fitting clothing, keeping your arm relaxed at your side.
With muscles relaxed, measure around the fullest part of your upper arm. Keep the tape snug with room for one finger.
Wrap the measuring tape around your wrist bone, where a watch would sit. Keep the tape snug but not tight. Leave room for one finger between the tape and your wrist for comfort
Measure from the highest point of the shoulder, next to the neck, over the fullest part of the bust, and straight down to your desired dress hem. Continue measuring to the finished length of the dress you wish to order, whether it’s a mini, knee-length, midi, maxi, or floor-length dress.
Measure around the base of your neck where a collar would sit, keeping the tape level with room for one finger.

Women’s Measuring Guide
All you need is a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help with the shoulder and back measurements. Wear close-fitting clothing so the tape sits against your body, stand naturally with your weight even on both feet, and keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger. Below is every measurement we may ask for. You do not have to get each number perfect: we send a free test garment before cutting your final cloth, so the fit is confirmed on your body first.
Stand straight with your arms relaxed and wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, keeping it level and snug with room for one finger.
Measure around the narrowest part of your waist, usually just above the belly button, keeping the tape level with room for one finger.
Measure around the area where you normally wear your trousers or skirts, keeping the tape level with room for one finger.

Sit down and measure from your natural waist at the front, down between your legs to the seat, to capture the rise for trousers.
Measure from the highest point of the crotch down the inside of your leg to the same hem point used for the trouser length measurement.
Measure from the top of your waistband down the outside of your leg to the point where you want the trouser hem to finish.

Most sheath dresses sold today are cut in stretch crepe, ponte or stretch wool. The stretch is there for a reason: it lets one size fit many bodies by pulling over the places where the pattern and the body disagree. The cost shows later, when the seat bags out, the hem rides up as you walk and the cloth starts to shine where it is pulled tight.
This tailored sheath dress has no stretch to lean on. It is cut to your measurements in Super 120s wool flannel, 100% wool and fully lined, with a V-neck, princess seams, a center back zip and a back vent, at knee length. Because pure wool cannot cover a fitting error, a free cotton test dress comes first and every correction is made before the flannel is cut.

Free Test Dress
A close dress fails at the hips before anywhere else. When the distance from the waist to the fullest part of the hip is longer or shorter than the pattern assumes, or the back hip is rounder than the front, the skirt climbs as you walk and creases sideways when you sit. On a test sheath we most often adjust the back hip, move the waist shaping up or down to your waist, and correct the bust seams so they pass over the bust point instead of beside it.
If a correction would change the line in the photos, such as a deeper dart, we explain the trade-off and you choose between the closer fit and the photographed shape.
No Stretch

This is the trade-off in plain terms: a stretch sheath is easier to buy and harder to keep; a wool sheath cut to you is harder to make and easier to keep. Seam allowances are left generous so the dress can follow your body for years.
The Silhouette
A sheath dress silhouette follows the body from shoulder to knee with no waist seam: the shape comes from princess seams and darts, not from a belt or gathers. A straight sheath dress silhouette drops from the hip to the hem without tapering, which is kinder to walking; a slim fit dress silhouette narrows below the hip into a pencil line. This one is straight to slightly tapered, with a back vent so the hem can open.
