You’ve seen the suit. You know exactly which one. GQ called it the best suit in film history — the grey glen plaid Cary Grant wears through every scene of North by Northwest. The problem is that every grey glen plaid suit you find online is just a grey glen plaid suit. Not this cut. Not the 3-roll-2 lapel that rolls over the top button. Not the ventless back. Not the high-waist double pleats at the natural waist. Those decisions are why the suit still looks right 65 years later — and this is the bespoke suit built to them, in Super 130s worsted wool, to your body measurements, with a free test suit before the final cloth is cut.
Follow these simple steps to ensure your custom garment fits you perfectly. All you need is a flexible measuring tape.
You do not have to get this perfect. Send us your best measurements and we craft a free test garment to your numbers first, so the fit is confirmed on your body before we cut your final cloth. Every piece is custom made to your measurements, and the test garment is yours to keep.

Jacket Measurements
Suits, Blazers, Shirts, Vests & Coats
Desired Jacket (Garment) Length Shoulder to Hem
Stand straight in a natural posture with your arms relaxed at your sides.
Start measuring from the top of your shoulder, right next to the base of your neck.
Measure straight down along the front of your body to where you want the jacket to end.
Keep the tape straight and do not curve it around the body.

Keep the tape level all the way around.
For comfort, leave space for one finger between the tape and your neck.
Shoulder Width Across the Back
Stand naturally with shoulders relaxed, do not pull them back.
Measure from the edge of one shoulder to the edge of the other shoulder across your back.
Follow the natural curve of the shoulders for an accurate measurement.
Keep the tape flat and do not measure too high near the neck.
Desired Sleeve Length
Stand straight with your arm relaxed in a natural posture.
Start measuring from the edge of your shoulder where the sleeve seam would sit.
Measure down your arm to where you want the sleeve to end.
Keep the tape following the outside of the arm and avoid bending the elbow.
Chest Circumference
Stand up straight with your arms relaxed at your sides.
Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your chest, typically right under your armpits.

Rise Crotch to Crotch

Start measuring from the back waistband where you normally wear your trousers.
Bring the tape between your legs and up to the front waistband.
Keep the tape close to the body for an accurate rise measurement, without pulling it too tight.
Before You Order
Your questions, answered
Ordering a garment made to your measurements should feel reassuring, not nerve-racking. Here are the doubts men most often have, and exactly why you can set them aside.
I have never bought a suit I could not try on in a shop first. How do I know it will fit?
Because you do try it on first. Once you send your measurements, we make a free test garment in a stand-in cloth cut to your numbers and post it to you. You put it on at home, check the shoulders, chest, waist, and length, move around in it, and send us your notes and a couple of photos. Only once you are happy do we cut your final cloth, so the finished suit is not a leap of faith, it is a fit you have already seen and approved on your own body.
I am worried I will measure myself wrong.
You do not have to get it perfect. The videos and steps above walk you through each measurement one at a time, a friend or a local tailor can help with the ones that are easier with a second pair of hands, and if you are unsure you can send your best numbers. The free test garment exists precisely to catch anything slightly off, we see the fit on your body and adjust before your final cloth is touched, so a first-try measurement is completely normal.
I have always struggled to find clothes that fit me. Broad shoulders, an athletic build, a longer or shorter torso, or a fuller waist. Is this really for someone like me?
It is made for exactly you. The men who fight hardest with off-the-rack are the ones who benefit most here, because there is no standard size to squeeze into. We cut to your proportions, broad shoulders with a trimmer waist, a fuller stomach with a shorter jacket length, a long or short back, so the garment follows your body instead of forcing your body into a shape it is not. There is nothing wrong with your build; there are only your measurements.
My body is not symmetrical, one shoulder sits lower or my posture is not textbook. Can you cut for that?
Yes. A garment made to your measurements is built for real bodies, not idealized ones. Note anything particular in your order, or simply show us on the test garment, and we adjust the cut, a lower shoulder, a fuller seat, a forward stance, and confirm it before the final cloth is cut. This is exactly what the process does that a size on a rack never can.
It is a lot to spend on something custom made. What is my safety net?
Your safety net is that nothing final, and nothing costly, is cut until you have approved the fit on the free test garment. You are not paying for a gamble, you are paying for a garment whose fit you have already confirmed on your own body. And a well-made piece that actually fits gets worn for years, so the cost per wear is usually far lower than the compromise suits and jackets that sit unworn in the wardrobe.
I need this for a wedding or a specific event and I am anxious it will not be right on the day.
Tell us the date when you order and we plan the whole timeline back from it, including the free test-garment stage, so there is time to confirm the fit and make any adjustments with room to spare. For a dated event we recommend ordering two to three months ahead. Because you approve the fit on the test garment before the final piece is cut, you are not walking into your event hoping it fits, you already know it does.
What if it arrives and something is still not quite right?
The final garment is cut to the exact fit you signed off on the test garment, so surprises are rare by design. If a small tweak is ever needed, your finished piece carries seam allowances so a local tailor can fine-tune it, and you can always contact us and we will help make it right. You are never left alone with something that does not work.
What if my weight changes before the event, or later on?
Take your measurements as close to the date as you can, and if your size shifts before we cut the final cloth we simply work to your new numbers. For afterwards, your finished garment is made with seam allowances so a local tailor can take it in or let it out within reason, and we keep your measurements on record, so ordering another piece that fits is simple whenever you want one.
Do I really need someone to help me, or can I do this alone?
You can absolutely do it alone. Most measurements are straightforward to take on yourself with the videos above, and only a few, like across the back and shoulders, are simply easier with a friend holding the tape. Either way, the free test garment is the real check: whatever you measure, you confirm the fit on your body before anything final is made.

The Most Studied Suit in Film History. Built to the Same Decisions.
In 1959, Alfred Hitchcock told his cast to dress in a classic style because he didn’t want the picture to date. Sixty-five years later, the grey glen plaid suit Cary Grant wears through every scene of North by Northwest is still being written about, ranked, and searched for. GQ named it the best suit in film history. Esquire agreed. A short story was written entirely from the suit’s perspective. A 4K restoration screened at Tribeca to a new generation seeing it for the first time.
Here is what most buyers searching for this suit don’t realise: the suit’s staying power has nothing to do with the color or the pattern. Edward, Duke of Windsor, had been wearing grey glen plaid for decades before the film. What makes this suit still look correct after 65 years is a set of specific decisions that Cary Grant and his Savile Row tailor made together — and every off-the-rack alternative skips all of them.
The 3-roll-2 button stance, where the lapel rolls gently over the top button so only two buttons fasten. The ventless back, cut high at the pockets because Grant stood with his hands in his trouser pockets and a vented jacket would have rumpled. The padded, slightly roped shoulders built to balance Grant’s large head. The forward-facing double pleats on high-waist trousers, worn at the natural waist. Every detail solves a specific problem. Change one and the silhouette breaks. This inspired version is built to every one of them, in Super 130s worsted wool, to your measurements.
Super 130s Worsted Wool Canvas Front Construction 3-Roll-2 Stance Free Test Suit Included 6 Fabric Options
Available in grey glen plaid and five additional glen plaid and plain options. Choose your acetate lining from 34 colors.
Free Test Suit
The Silhouette Has to Be Exact. The Test Suit Makes Sure It Is.
This suit works because every proportion is right. The lapel roll. The shoulder stance. The trouser rise. One centimeter off and it stops being this suit. It becomes a grey plaid suit.
Before we cut your final suit in Super 130s wool, we make a cotton test suit and ship it to you first. Put on the jacket — the lapel should roll naturally over that top button without being forced. Put on the trousers — they should sit at the natural waist, not the hips. Tell us what needs adjusting. We fix everything before the real fabric is touched.
The test suit is yours to keep. We retain a copy for reference. Both the test suit and the final suit ship worldwide.
Who It’s For
Not Everyone Who Wants This Suit Wants It for the Same Reason.
The man who has read every analysis and wants the real version
You know about the Kilgour/Quintino debate. You know the suit was ventless because of how Grant stood. You know the shoulders were padded to counterbalance his head. You want the inspired version built to those exact decisions — not a grey glen plaid suit with a vague claim to the silhouette.
The man commissioning his one investment suit
Hitchcock deliberately designed this suit not to date. It has not dated in 65 years. If you are spending serious money on one bespoke suit, the one built to survive every fashion cycle is not a bad choice. It will still look correct in another 65 years.
The man who bought a grey glen plaid suit and felt the difference
You already know the pattern is not the point. You bought the suit, you wore it, and it looked like a grey glen plaid suit — not this. The cut is what you are actually buying. That is what this page is about.
The person buying a gift for someone who would never buy it themselves
Five reviews, all five stars. Several came from gifts — a husband, a father, a partner who had admired this suit for years. You can order from the measurements of a suit they already own. The test suit process catches anything that needs adjusting before the final wool is cut.
How It Works
From Measurements to Final Suit
1
Choose your fabric and lining. Grey glen plaid is screen-accurate. Five other options are available for the same silhouette in a different palette. Pick any of 34 acetate lining colors.
2
Enter your measurements at checkout. Everything is done on the product page. A guide walks you through each measurement. If you are ordering as a gift using an existing suit as reference, submit those measurements marked as ready.
3
We make your test suit first. Cotton test suit, shipped to you. Try on the jacket. Try on the trousers. Check the lapel roll and the trouser rise. Send us your notes. We correct everything before cutting the wool.
4
We build the final suit. Canvas front jacket, hand-stitched armholes, hand-finished buttonholes, hand-stitched trouser hem. Built to your adjusted measurements.
5
Shipped to your door by trackable courier. Both the test suit and the final suit. The test suit is yours to keep.

vs. Other Glen Plaid Suits
The Coat vs. The Copy
Every other grey glen plaid suit — off a high-street rail or from a costume shop — gets the pattern right and misses everything else. Here is what that actually means on the body.
Off the Rack
Baron Boutique
Lapel stance
Standard 2-button or 3-button — the lapel breaks hard at the top button, the chest looks closed
3-roll-2 stance — the lapel rolls softly over the top button, opens the chest, reads exactly as it does in the film
Jacket vents
Single or double vent as standard — the jacket shifts and rumples when you stand with hands in pockets
Ventless, cut high at the pockets — the jacket sits clean and still the way Grant’s did
Trousers
Slim cut or flat-front, worn at the hips — the trouser line collapses the whole silhouette
High-waist double forward pleats worn at the natural waist — the long, vertical line that makes the suit look the way it looks
Fit guarantee
Size chart only — if the proportions are wrong on the body, there is no mechanism to fix them
Free cotton test suit shipped before the final wool is cut — every proportion confirmed on your body first
Fabric
Poly blends or unspecified wool, rarely accurate in weight or weave
Super 130s 100% worsted wool in six options — the cloth behaves correctly under lighting and reads as a real suit
Color options
Grey only, one option
6 wool colors, 34 lining colors — same price regardless of choice
The Finishing Detail
Grant wore the suit with a dark grey silk tie and understated accessories. If you want to complete the look, our Men’s Glen Plaid Cashmere Scarf in tan and white houndstooth is the piece that pulls it together — handcrafted from Grade A Tibetan cashmere in the same classic check pattern.

FAQ
Common Questions
I’ve seen grey glen plaid suits for a fraction of the price. What am I actually paying for here?
The pattern and the test suit. A cheap grey glen plaid suit has the pattern. What it does not have is the 3-roll-2 lapel stance, the ventless back, the high-waist pleated trousers, or a canvas chest and a free test suit. Those are the construction decisions that make the suit look the way it looks in the film. Without them, you have a grey plaid suit. With them, you have this suit. The difference is visible from across a room.
Why does the 3-roll-2 stance matter and can I see it in the test suit?
On a standard 2-button jacket the lapel breaks sharply at the top button, which tightens and closes the chest. On a 3-roll-2, the lapel rolls over the top button in a soft curve, which opens the chest and creates the long, relaxed line you recognise from the film. Yes — the test suit is built to the same construction, so you can check the roll before the final wool is cut. If it is not right, we adjust.
Can the trousers be made flat-front?
Yes. The screen inspired version uses forward-facing double pleats at the natural waist. If you prefer flat-front, note it in the order comments at checkout. The high-waist cut stays the same either way — the trousers still sit where they are supposed to sit.
Can I order this as a gift using measurements from a suit my partner already owns?
Yes. Submit the measurements marked as ready — for example, chest 42″ (ready). The test suit will show any adjustments needed before the final wool is cut. If you want to skip the test suit for a surprise, send us photos of how each measurement was taken and we will review them for anything that looks off before we start.
I’m allergic to wool. Is there anything you can do?
Yes. We can extend the lining to the full length of the trouser leg, front and back, at no extra charge. Note it in the comment box on the measurement page at checkout, or email us with your order number.
How long will this take?
Allow 4-6 weeks from test suit approval to delivery of the final suit. That covers the test suit, shipping it to you, any adjustments, and production of the final garment. Both pieces ship worldwide by trackable courier.
The original was made by Kilgour on Savile Row. How does this compare?
Kilgour’s Arthur Lyons made the principal suits for the film — he also tailored for the Duke of Windsor. Quintino in Beverly Hills made the stunt duplicates from the same pattern. What every version shared: bespoke construction to Grant’s measurements, canvas fronts, and the exact design decisions that define the silhouette. This inspired version uses the same construction method — canvas fronts, hand-stitched armholes, hand-finished buttonholes — built to your measurements with a test suit to confirm fit before the final cloth is cut. Different address. Same method.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. We ship worldwide by trackable courier. Both the test suit and the final suit go to your address regardless of location.

Delighted the moment I tried it onHello Baron Boutique,
I hope you are doing well.
I just received my suit, tried it on immediately, and must say: it fits perfectly! Many thanks to you and your team for this great work; it is exactly as I imagined it!!
I would also like to emphasize the excellent email communication between us regarding the additional adjustments; this is really not a given these days!
I have one more question: Are the adjustments we made via email through the test garment also saved in case I would like to have more suits made in the future?
Baron Boutique Team (verified owner)–
Thank you, Christian, for giving us the opportunity to tailor this iconic suit for you. I’m delighted to hear that the fit met your expectations.
Yes, all the adjustments made through email during the test garment process have been saved in your final pattern. We’ll be able to use this updated pattern for any future orders to ensure the same great fit.

The best suits I've ever hadBest suits I’ve ever had!
I agree with the other reviewer entirely. The product was made to my exact specifications. I’ve never had a suit that made me look better. One person I know who does alterations told me the suit was made with “impeccable workmanship.” I ordered four of these suits: one in every color on the website and another one in slate blue! I also have a Brioni I bought on the web for around $1,600, and I like my suits from Baron even better than that one! And I got four suits from Baron for about the price I paid for the one Brioni! I’m sure I’ll be asked about the suit and will be glad to recommend Baron. The suits are the height of classic elegance and they make me look like a king!

Men’s Suit Fit Guide
How a Men’s Suit Should Fit
A suit is judged in the first few seconds and then worn for hours, so it has to be two things at once: sharp enough to command the room, and comfortable enough to sit, reach, and move through a long day. With a suit made to your measurements, fit is not a gamble. There are no standard sizes to squeeze into. You tell us the fit you want and your measurements, we cut the jacket and trousers to your body, and before we cut your final cloth we send a free test garment so the fit is confirmed on you first.
A suit like this is not a one-time purchase. Cut to your proportions and built properly, it becomes the piece you reach for at every wedding, interview, and dinner for years, and still feels like yours long after. This guide covers the four fits we offer and the points to check so it sits exactly the way you want.
Step One
Choose your fit
Slim
Closely tailored through the chest and waist with a lean trouser line. The sharpest, most modern silhouette, for a body-skimming look with less ease.
Standard
Shaped and tailored with a little more room through the body for comfort and movement. The most versatile choice and the one most men are happiest in.
Relaxed
The most room through the body, with a softer, easier line and a straighter trouser. Ideal if you like to layer or simply want maximum comfort.
Athletic
Cut for a built frame, with extra room through the chest, shoulders, and thigh and a trimmer waist, so a muscular or V-shaped build fits cleanly with no pulling.
Step Two
The fit checkpoints
Shoulders
The seam sits right at the edge of your shoulder, where the arm meets the body, with no overhang and no pulling. This is the line we cut most precisely to you, because the shoulder is the hardest area to alter later.
Chest & button
The jacket closes cleanly with no strain, no gaping, and no X-shaped pull at the button. A well-cut chest lets you fasten the jacket and still breathe and move.
Waist & length
The jacket takes in gently at the waist for shape, closely on a slim fit, softly on a classic fit, and ends around the middle of your hand when your arms hang relaxed.
Sleeve & trouser
The jacket sleeve finishes at the wrist bone with a little shirt cuff showing. The trouser breaks lightly at the shoe or skims to a clean ankle, whichever you choose. You set all of these.
Every suit is made to your measurements with no standard sizing, in the fit you choose. A free test garment confirms the shoulders, chest, waist, and length on your body before your final cloth is cut, and the test garment is yours to keep.
Your Worries, Answered
The doubts most men have, and why you can relax
I have never bought a suit I could not try on in a shop first. How do I know it will fit?
Because you do try it on first. After you send your measurements, we make a free test garment in a stand-in cloth to those numbers and post it to you. You put it on at home, check the shoulders, chest, waist, and length, and send us your notes and a couple of photos. Only once you are happy do we cut your final cloth, so the finished suit is not a leap of faith, it is a fit you have already seen and approved on your own body.
I have always struggled to find a suit that fits. Broad shoulders, an athletic build, a fuller waist, a long or short torso. Is this really for me?
It is made for exactly you. The men who fight hardest with off-the-rack are the ones who gain the most here, because there is no fixed size to force yourself into. We cut to your proportions, broad shoulders with a trimmer waist, a fuller stomach with the right jacket length, a long or short back, so the suit follows your body instead of the other way around. There is nothing wrong with your build; there are only your measurements.
I am nervous I will measure myself wrong.
You do not have to be perfect. Our guide walks you through each measurement, a friend or a local tailor can help with the tricky ones, and if you are unsure you can send your best numbers. The free test garment exists to catch anything slightly off before it matters, we see the fit on your body and adjust, so an imperfect first measurement is completely normal.
I need it for a wedding or a specific event and I am anxious it will not be right on the day.
Tell us the date when you order and we plan the whole timeline back from it, including the free test-garment stage, so there is room to confirm the fit and make any adjustments with time to spare. For a dated event we recommend ordering two to three months ahead. Because you approve the fit on the test garment before the final suit is cut, you are not walking in hoping it fits, you already know it does.
It is a lot to spend on one suit. What is my safety net?
Nothing final, and nothing costly, is cut until you have approved the fit on the free test garment, so you are never paying for a gamble. And a suit that actually fits gets worn again and again, to weddings, interviews, dinners, for years, so the cost spread across all that wear is usually far lower than the compromise suits that sit unworn in the wardrobe.
Will I still be happy with it in a few years, or is this just for one occasion?
It is built to be owned, not used once. We cut a timeless line rather than a passing trend, and the suit is constructed properly with quality cloth and generous seam allowances, so it holds its shape and can be adjusted as you change. Most men find the suit becomes a quiet favourite, the one they trust for anything important, and five years on it still feels like theirs. That is the difference between owning a suit and simply buying one.
What if it arrives and something is still not right?
The final suit is cut to the exact fit you approved on the test garment, so surprises are rare by design. If a small tweak is ever needed, the finished suit carries generous seam allowances so a local tailor can fine-tune it, and you can always contact us and we will help make it right. You are never left alone with a suit that does not work.
What if my weight changes over the years?
Take your measurements as close to your order as you can, and if your size shifts before we cut the final cloth we simply work to your new numbers. For later on, the finished suit is made with seam allowances so a local tailor can take it in or let it out within reason, and we keep your measurements on record, so ordering another piece that fits is simple whenever you want one.

Thank you, Christian, for giving us the opportunity to tailor this iconic suit for you. I’m delighted to hear that the fit met your expectations.
Yes, all the adjustments made through email during the test garment process have been saved in your final pattern. We’ll be able to use this updated pattern for any future orders to ensure the same great fit.

We will tag you on social media in a wedding photo of Wilson in his suit.

Fantastic suit, brilliant serviceFantastic!
Brilliant service. Fast dispatch of both try-on suit and actual finished product. All my ideas taken on board and feedback from try-on suit followed to the letter. Couldn’t be happier. Fits fantastically well. Best suit I ever had at a very reasonable price. Always liked this suit on-screen and pleased to see it added on here.
When I need another suit, this is where I will be shopping.
Photo’s to follow once I have a nice shirt, shoes and subtle oval monogrammed cufflinks.
