How do I measure my bust, waist and length for a custom garment?
Use a flexible tape. For the bust, wrap it around the fullest part with the tape level. For the waist, measure the narrowest part, usually just above the belly button. For length, measure from the shoulder or natural waist down to your desired hem. Keep the tape level and snug with room for one finger, and measure over close-fitting clothing rather than bulky layers.
How do I measure my waist, hips, thighs and rise?

What do I need to measure myself?

How tight should the measuring tape be?
Snug but not tight. The tape should sit flat against your body with just enough room to slip one finger underneath. Pulling it too tight gives measurements that are too small, and leaving it loose makes the garment baggy.
What if my measurements are not perfect?
That is exactly why we send a free test garment. Give us your best measurements, and we build a test version in a stand-in cloth to your numbers and ship it to you. You try it on, we adjust from there, and nothing is cut in your final fabric until the fit is confirmed.

Before we cut your chosen cloth, we make a test version of your garment in cotton, cut from the same pattern, and send it to you free. You try it on and tell us what to change. Only after you approve the fit do we make the final piece. The test garment is yours to keep.

Leather Is Cut Once, So the Fit Is Settled in Cotton
In wool, a tailor can take in a seam and press the old line away. In leather, the old stitching leaves a row of holes, so every correction has to happen before the hide is cut. On a long coat the points that matter most are the shoulder width, the height of the waist seam, the room across the back when you reach forward, and the length: a mid-calf hem that is two inches off reads as a mistake.
Women most often ask us to adjust the bust and the waist position, and to set the length to their height and their usual heels. All of that is decided on the cotton coat, on you, before the leather is touched.

Walk, sit and reach in it
Check where the waist seam sits, how the skirt opens when you walk, whether the shoulders allow you to reach forward, and where the hem lands with the shoes you will wear. Tell us every change, however small.

Your corrections go into the pattern, the leather coat is made in 3 to 4 weeks, and it arrives 5 to 10 days after dispatch. The cotton coat is yours to keep.
The Leather
Cow Nappa or Lambskin: Which Leather Suits Your Coat
All three options are full-grain genuine leather, not bonded, coated or synthetic. If you searched for a genuine leather women’s long leather coat, this is it: the outer surface is the real grain of the hide, which is why it creases softly with wear instead of peeling.
Cow nappa, black (default)
Firmer and heavier. It holds the wide peak lapels and flared cuffs in shape on its own and resists scuffs, so it suits a coat worn hard through the cold months. It softens with wear but keeps its structure.
Black lambskin
Softer, lighter and smoother, with a fine grain. It drapes more and is comfortable from the first day, but it marks and scuffs more easily, so it suits a coat worn with a little more care.
Dark brown lambskin
The same soft lambskin in a deep brown, which reads warmer and less severe than black, and goes with camel, cream and denim.
Our advice: if this will be your everyday winter coat, choose cow nappa; if you want the softest drape and will wear it for evenings and travel, choose lambskin. A long coat in cow nappa is noticeably heavier on the shoulders than one in lambskin, which is worth knowing if you carry a bag all day.
The Back
The Back View: Where a Long Leather Coat Is Won or Lost
Look at most long leather coats from behind and they hang straight from the shoulders like a cape, because the back is cut flat with only side seams. This one is cut on princess seams that run from the shoulder to the hem, so the back follows the waist and then opens into a skirt.

Three rear vents
Let the mid-calf hem part as you walk or climb stairs, so the leather swings instead of dragging against your legs.
Straight front hem

The long coat back view is also where the fit shows: if the waist seam sits too high or too low, the vents open in the wrong place. That is one of the first things we check on your test coat.

A car coat stops at the hip or the upper thigh so you can sit and drive in it. This coat is the opposite: long, fitted at the waist and flared below it, closer to a leather frock coat than to anything cut for the car. The wide peak lapels, 3.5 to 4.5 inches, point up toward the shoulder and keep the coat looking deliberate when it is worn open.

Five Years On
What Five Years Do to a Leather Coat
Full-grain leather ages by softening. The creases at the inside of the elbows and across the back of the hands at the cuffs deepen first, the shine of new cow nappa settles into a softer sheen, and the coat begins to follow your movement. That is wear you want; it is what makes an old leather coat look owned rather than bought.
What fails first on lower-cost long coats is different: coated or corrected leather starts to crack at the folds, bonded leather peels, and fused fronts bubble. A coat cut too tight wears fastest where it pulls, across the back and at the buttons. With a fitted cut, a hanger that supports the shoulders, a damp cloth for marks and conditioning once or twice a season, a leather coat like this one is a coat for many winters, and its ample seam allowances leave room for small adjustments later.

There are no standard sizes, we cut it to your measurements with the right ease built in for layering, and a free test garment confirms the fit, over your usual layers, before your final cloth is cut. The doubts most women have, and why you can relax
I am worried a custom-made coat will be too tight over my jumpers.
This is the most common coat worry, and it is exactly what we plan for. A coat is cut with more ease than a jacket precisely so it closes comfortably over your layers, and when you try the free test garment we ask you to put it on over the jumper or blazer you would normally wear underneath. If it feels at all snug, we add room before the final cloth is cut, so the finished coat is never tight over your usual layers.
A coat is a big spend. What if it arrives and it is wrong?
Nothing final, and nothing costly, is cut until you have approved the fit on the free test garment. You are not gambling a large sum on a coat you have never seen on your body; you are confirming the fit on a test version first, over your layers, and only then do we cut the real cloth. That is the whole point of the process, to take the risk out of the biggest, most visible piece in your wardrobe.
I have never been able to find a coat that fits my shoulders and my shape at once.

You do not need to get it perfect. Our guide takes you through each measurement, a friend or a local tailor can help, and you measure over light clothing so we can allow for layers ourselves. How do I choose the right length without seeing it on?
Tell us the look you want, cropped, mid-thigh, knee, or full-length, and we draft it to your height so the proportion suits your frame. If you are unsure, a length that ends around the mid-thigh or knee flatters most people. The test garment then lets you see the length on your body and change it before the final coat is cut, so you are never guessing.
Will a fitted coat still look shaped, or will it end up boxy to fit the layers?
It stays shaped. We build in enough room for layers while still cutting a waist and a clean line, so the coat reads as tailored, not as a box. You choose how close or relaxed you want it, and the test garment lets you confirm that balance of room and shape on your own body.
What if my size changes, or I want to wear it over heavier layers in future?
Coats carry generous seam allowances, so a local tailor can adjust the body within reason if your shape changes. And because we cut with layering in mind and keep your measurements on record, you can tell us up front if you plan to wear it over heavy knits, and we allow for it.
The whole custom process feels intimidating. What actually happens?
It is simpler than it sounds. You choose the coat, cloth, and length and send your measurements; we make a free test garment and post it to you; you try it on over your layers and send notes and photos; we adjust and then cut and hand-tailor your final coat; and it ships to you with tracking. At no point are you committing to a finished coat you have not already seen fit on your body.
