He sent Tom Cruise to deliver packages around Los Angeles in it to test whether a man in this suit could walk into a room and not be remembered. The test worked. The suit worked. And the reason it worked is the same reason most grey suits fail: the ones that try to look expensive advertise it, and the ones that do not bother look exactly like that.
Vincent’s suit, built by a Kowloon tailor according to the film’s own mythology, sits in neither category. Single-button closure. Narrow notch lapels at 2.75 to 3.25 inches. Three piped pockets, no flap. Double vents. Flat-front trousers with side-tab adjusters. No belt. Several details mark this suit as specific to the Collateral character rather than a generic single-button suit. The lapels are narrow, between 2.75 and 3.25 inches, which was unusual at the time the film was made and remains distinctive. All three pockets are piped with no flap, giving the front a very clean line. The trouser waistband uses side-tab adjusters with no belt loops, a detail that most off-the-rack single-button suits do not carry.
