# House of Velvet

Made-to-order velvet jackets and coats in premium velvet on a canvas front, from dinner jackets and smoking jackets to dramatic frock coats.

All garments are made to order by [Baron Boutique](https://baronboutique.com/okf/company.md). Every bespoke order includes a complimentary cotton test garment shipped before the final fabric is cut.

Cheap Velvet Looks Like a Costume. The Difference Is the Cloth and the Fit.
Velvet is the one fabric that changes the room. The cut pile absorbs direct light and throws back the warm, low light of an evening event, so a burgundy or midnight jacket reads deeper and richer than anything flat-woven beside it. It is the fabric of the holiday party, the winter wedding, and black tie with a point of view. It is also the fabric most often ruined by a bad version, because the same pile that catches light also catches every pulling seam and every dropped shoulder. A stiff, off-the-rack velvet jacket in a boxy S, M, or L is what turns velvet into a costume.

How to choose your velvet piece
- Burgundy Velvet Dinner Jacket, the One People Search For: A burgundy velvet dinner jacket with black silk satin peak lapels, made to your measurements. Burgundy is the most-requested velvet we make and the color that reads festive without reading loud, worn over black trousers …
- Blue and Black Velvet Dinner Jackets, the Evening Statement: Single-button velvet dinner jackets in rich blue or black with satin lapels, made to your measurements in 11 velvet colors.
- The Velvet Smoking Jacket, Our Number One: A burgundy velvet smoking jacket with a shawl collar and traditional braided frogging, made to your measurements.
- Velvet Frock Coats, the Dramatic Silhouette: Full-length velvet frock coats with wide peak lapels, made to your measurements, from a forest green statement coat to the theatrical Pirate frock coat in velvet.
- Screen-Inspired Velvet Coats, the Doctor Collection: Made-to-your-measurements velvet coats drawn from Doctor Who: the 12th Doctor’s maroon, navy, and black velvet coats, the 3rd Doctor’s green velvet jacket, and Tom Baker’s wine velvet frock coat.
- Velvet for Weddings and Layering: The velvet groomsmen blazer for a wedding party that wants texture in the photographs, and the navy topcoat with a velvet collar for a touch of velvet worn over everything else. Both made to your measurements.

Choose your piece, velvet color, and lining
Pick the jacket or coat, then your velvet color and lining on its product page and enter your measurements there. No appointment, and no emails needed to start.

We send a free test garment
Before any velvet is cut, we build a test piece in a low-cost cloth to your measurements and ship it to your home by trackable courier. Velvet is unforgiving of a bad fit, so this step matters more here than anywhere.

You confirm the fit at home
Try it on and check the shoulders, the chest, and the length, then send your notes. Nothing is cut in your final velvet until the fit is confirmed on your body.

We cut your velvet
Every adjustment is applied, then your piece is cut on a canvas front with hand-stitched armholes, hand-finished buttonholes, and fabric-covered buttons in your velvet.

It ships worldwide with tracking
Your finished velvet piece ships from Dubai by trackable courier, about four to six weeks from measurement confirmation including the test-garment stage. The test garment is yours to keep.

## Questions & Answers

**Q:** When can you wear a velvet jacket?
**A:** A velvet jacket belongs to the cooler half of the year and to the evening. It is at its best from autumn through winter and into early spring, at holiday parties, Christmas and New Year’s dinners, winter weddings, cocktail events, and black-tie or black-tie-optional evenings. The fabric reads as festive and luxurious under warm, low light, which is exactly the setting most of these occasions provide. It is not a daytime or high-summer garment.

**Q:** Is a velvet jacket appropriate for black tie?
**A:** Yes. A velvet dinner jacket or velvet smoking jacket is a recognized black-tie option, worn with black formal trousers, a white or black dress shirt, and a bow tie. Velvet is, in fact, one of the traditional evening fabrics, and a burgundy, midnight, or black velvet jacket is a confident alternative to a plain black tuxedo jacket at any black-tie-optional event. For strict black tie, keep the trousers and accessories formal and let the velvet be the single point of interest.

**Q:** Can I wear a velvet jacket to a wedding?
**A:** Yes, and it photographs beautifully doing it. Velvet’s pile creates depth in images that flat fabrics cannot match, which is why grooms and wedding guests choose it for autumn and winter weddings. For a summer or daytime wedding velvet can run warm and read heavy, so it suits an evening reception better than an afternoon ceremony in the sun. The velvet groomsmen blazer in this collection is built specifically for a wedding party that wants texture in the photographs.

**Q:** What color velvet is the most versatile?
**A:** Burgundy is the most-requested and arguably the most versatile, festive enough for the holidays yet restrained enough to wear to any evening event. Midnight blue and navy are close behind and read richer than black under venue light. Black velvet is the quiet, most formal choice. Green is a striking, characterful option that works well at events with a festive or creative dress code. Most of these pieces are available in up to 11 velvet colors at the same price, so the choice is yours.

**Q:** What is the difference between a velvet dinner jacket and a velvet smoking jacket?
**A:** A velvet dinner jacket is cut like a formal jacket with structured shoulders and satin lapels, made to be worn out to black-tie events with formal trousers. A velvet smoking jacket is softer and more relaxed, traditionally a garment of private leisure, and is signalled by its shawl collar and braided frogging closure rather than notch or peak lapels. In practice both are worn to evening occasions today, but the smoking jacket carries a more historic, at-home character while the dinner jacket is the sharper formal statement.

**Q:** Does a velvet jacket look like a costume?
**A:** Cheap velvet does, and for two reasons: the cloth is thin and shiny, and the fit is wrong. A boxy off-the-rack velvet jacket in a generic size, cut from low-grade fabric, is what gives velvet its fancy-dress reputation. A velvet piece in a quality poly-cotton velvet that holds its pile, cut to your actual measurements on a canvas front, reads as tailoring instead. Fit is the deciding factor, which is why every piece here is made to your measurements and confirmed with a free test garment before the velvet is cut.

**Q:** What do I wear with a velvet jacket?
**A:** For a formal look, wear black tailored or tuxedo trousers, a crisp dress shirt in white or black, and a bow tie; the plain black grounds the velvet and lets it be the statement. For a dressed-down look, a velvet jacket works over dark slim jeans and a fine-gauge knit or patterned shirt for a cocktail evening or a smart dinner. Keep accessories simple in either case, because velvet already carries the outfit and does not need competition.

**Q:** Can I dress a velvet jacket down for a less formal event?
**A:** Yes. One of velvet’s advantages is its range. The same jacket that reads black-tie over formal trousers reads relaxed and modern over dark jeans with a patterned shirt and no tie. A single-button velvet dinner jacket or the groomsmen blazer both handle this shift well. It is one of the few pieces that can carry you from a formal dinner to a stylish night out with only a change of trousers and shirt.

**Q:** How do I care for a velvet jacket?
**A:** Velvet is dry-clean only. Between wears, hang it on a broad shaped hanger so the shoulders keep their line, and use a soft garment brush in the direction of the pile to lift dust and keep the nap even. To release light creases, steam it gently by hanging it near a hot shower or holding a garment steamer a few inches away; never press velvet with a hot iron, as direct heat and pressure crush the pile permanently. Stored and brushed correctly, a good velvet jacket keeps its depth for years.

**Q:** Do you offer velvet coats as well as jackets?
**A:** Yes. Alongside the velvet dinner jackets and the smoking jacket, the collection includes full-length velvet frock coats and screen-inspired velvet coats. The green velvet frock coat and the Pirate frock coat in velvet are dramatic, floor-skimming statement pieces, and the Doctor Who velvet coats, including the 12th Doctor’s maroon, navy, and black versions and the 4th Doctor’s wine velvet frock coat, are screen-accurate coats built as wearable tailoring. All are made to your measurements.

**Q:** Are these velvet pieces made to my measurements or standard sizes?
**A:** Every piece here is made to your measurements, with no standard sizes and nothing pre-made. You enter your measurements on the product page, and before we cut your final velvet we send a free test garment so the fit is confirmed on your body first. Because velvet shows a poor fit more than almost any other fabric, this step is the single most important reason these pieces look like tailoring rather than costume.

**Q:** How long does a velvet piece take, and do you ship worldwide?
**A:** Production takes about four to six weeks from the point your measurements are confirmed, which includes the free test-garment stage. We ship worldwide from Dubai by trackable courier. If you have a fixed date such as a wedding or a holiday event, order at least 8 to 10 weeks ahead so there is comfortable time for the test garment and any adjustments, or contact us before ordering and we will tell you honestly whether a tighter timeline can work.
