# Patterned Cashmere Scarves

Suiting Patterns, Woven and Printed in Cashmere Glen plaid, houndstooth, tartan and check are suiting patterns before they are scarf patterns — we have been cutting them into jackets for twenty-five years. Here they are woven into cashmere in twill, diamond and pearl structures, alongside hand-printed leopard, nature and celestial designs. All 100% Grade A Himalayan cashmere.

All garments are made to order by [Baron Boutique](https://baronboutique.com/okf/company.md). Every bespoke order includes a complimentary cotton test garment shipped before the final fabric is cut.

A Woven Pattern and a Printed Pattern Are Not the Same Product
Most patterned cashmere sold online is printed — the design applied to a finished plain-woven cloth. It is fast, it is cheap, and it fades. A woven pattern is built into the structure of the fabric on the loom, thread by thread, which means it exists on both faces and cannot fade off, because there is no surface layer to fade. This collection contains both, on purpose. The glen plaid, red houndstooth, multicolor tartan, check and stripe pieces are woven

Three weave structures and one print method
- Twill — tartan, stripe, ombre tie-dye: A diagonal structure where the weft passes over two or more warp threads before going under. It gives a visible diagonal grain, drapes more fluidly than plain weave, and resists creasing — useful on a piece that lives fo…
- Diamond — spun at 26/2: A broken twill that reverses direction at set intervals, producing a small diamond lattice in the cloth itself. We spin it at a heavier 26/2 count rather than our finest 200/2, because this structure is meant to hold sha…
- Glen plaid and check — woven, not printed: The tan and white glen plaid and the multicolor check are woven checks, which means the pattern reads on both faces and will still be there in twenty years.
- Hand-printed — leopard, nature, solar & lunar: Printed by hand onto finished handwoven cashmere, not roller-printed onto mill cloth. The base fabric is the same hand-spun, handwoven Grade A cashmere as everything else here — which is the whole difference between a pr…

## Questions & Answers

**Q:** How do I tell a woven pattern from a printed one?
**A:** Look at the reverse. A woven pattern appears on both faces, usually as a mirror or tonal negative of the front, because the design is made of the threads themselves. A printed pattern appears on one face only and the back is plain. You can also feel it — a printed surface has a very slight film where the ink sits, while a woven pattern feels identical to the ground cloth.

**Q:** Why do patterned pieces take longer to make than solid ones?
**A:** Loom time. A plain weave advances at a steady rate, while a twill or diamond structure needs a different heddle sequence and slows the weaver considerably. Any error in the repeat means unpicking rather than adjusting. A patterned piece can take half again as long on the loom as a solid one of the same size. The fiber is identical — the difference is days, not materials.

**Q:** Will the leopard or tie-dye print fade?
**A:** Printed cashmere loses some intensity over many years of wear and washing. That is honest to say and most sellers avoid saying it. It fades far more slowly than printed silk or viscose because cashmere holds pigment well, and ours are applied with azo-free dyes rather than pigment binders that sit on the surface. If permanence matters more than the design, choose a woven structure — a tartan or houndstooth will look the same in twenty years.

**Q:** Is glen plaid the same as houndstooth?
**A:** No, though they are related and often confused. Houndstooth is a broken check with a distinctive pointed four-cornered shape, woven in a 4-over-4 twill. Glen plaid — properly Glen Urquhart check — is a larger pattern built from alternating bands of small and large checks, and it often contains houndstooth as one of its elements. Our tan and white piece is a glen plaid built on a houndstooth ground, which is why it is described as both.

**Q:** Why is the diamond weave spun at a different yarn count?
**A:** Because the structure has a different job. Our finest 200/2 yarn produces the lightest possible cloth, which is what you want in a shawl that folds into a pocket. The diamond weave is meant to hold its shape on the shoulder, so we spin it at a heavier 26/2 — two thicker singles plied together. Using 200/2 there would produce a beautiful cloth that refused to stay where you put it.

**Q:** Can patterned pieces be personalized?
**A:** Yes, but placement matters more than on a solid. Embroidery on a busy pattern works best in a corner, in a single thread color drawn from the design itself, rather than a contrasting monogram that fights the weave. We send a placement proof before stitching.
