Most Shawls Sold to Men as “Pashmina” Are Not Pashmina Pashmina is not a style, a size, or a level of softness. It is a specific fiber: the fine undercoat of the Changthangi goat, which lives above 14,000 feet where the cold forces it to grow an undercoat fine enough that it cannot be machine-harvested without breaking. It is combed by hand in spring. That is the entire definition, and almost everything sold under the name fails it. We have worked with the same workshop for twenty-five years. ## Questions & Answers **Q:** Is pashmina the same as cashmere? **A:** All pashmina is cashmere, but very little cashmere is pashmina. Cashmere is the general term for the fine undercoat of any cashmere goat. Pashmina refers specifically to the finest grade of that undercoat, from the Changthangi goat of the high Himalaya, traditionally hand-spun and handwoven. The relationship is like champagne and sparkling wine — one is a subset of the other, defined by origin and method rather than by a quality claim. **Q:** How can I check whether a pashmina is real before buying? **A:** Ask three questions any honest seller can answer instantly: what is the micron count, what is the yarn count, and where was it woven. Real pashmina runs roughly 14 to 16 microns at a 200/2 hand-spun count. If the answer is vague, it is a blend. Then check the ends — hand-loomed pieces have hand-knotted fringe, while machine-made ones are cut or serged. **Q:** Will cashmere itch? **A:** Grade A cashmere at 14 to 16 microns should not. Itch is a function of fiber diameter — anything much above 22 microns is felt by most people as prickle, which is why lambswool and coarse blends irritate. It is also caused by guard hair left in during processing.
