# Handwoven Cashmere Scarves & Shawls

Solid-Color Cashmere Shawls, Handwoven in Nepal Solid color, one weaver, one loom, roughly five days a piece. Sized 28 × 80, 36 × 80 and 40 × 80 inches — widths chosen the way we would choose a lapel, because how a shawl sits over a shoulder or under a coat collar is a question of proportion, not preference. 14–16 micron Grade A Himalayan fiber, hand-spun, azo-free dyes.

All garments are made to order by [Baron Boutique](https://baronboutique.com/okf/company.md). Every bespoke order includes a complimentary cotton test garment shipped before the final fabric is cut.

A Solid Shawl Has Nowhere to Hide
There is no pattern to distract the eye and no print to cover an uneven weave, so every irregularity in the yarn and every inconsistency in tension shows on the surface. A solid-color cashmere shawl is the piece that tells you whether a workshop can actually weave, which is why it is the first thing we would ask any cashmere seller to show us. These are woven on traditional handlooms in our Kathmandu workshop from hand-spun Grade A fiber at 14 to 16 microns with a 35 to 55mm staple. Each takes roughly five days. The dyes are azo-free, which matters more on a solid than anywhere else, because here the color is the entire product.

Three yarn counts, chosen for what the piece has to do
Most sellers quote one yarn count, or none at all. We spin three, because a shawl meant to disappear into a coat pocket and a wrap meant to hold its shape over a shoulder are not the same problem.
- 200/2 — the featherweight: Two ultra-fine singles twisted together. The finest count we spin, and the reason a full 40 × 80 inch shawl can come in around 70 grams and still hold its structure.
- 26/2 — body and structure: A heavier two-ply, used where the cloth needs to hold a shape rather than pour. Our diamond weave is spun at this count, which is why it sits on the shoulder instead of sliding and keeps a fold rather than falling flat.
- 28/1 — single-ply softness: A single, unplied yarn. Without the twist of a two-ply it lies flatter and feels softer immediately against the skin, at the cost of some durability. Used where handle matters more than hard wear.
- Why we publish this at all: Yarn count, micron and staple length are the three numbers that determine whether cashmere lasts twenty years or one winter.

28, 36 or 40 inches wide
- 28 × 80 — the scarf proportion: Narrow enough to loop at the neck and sit flat under a coat collar without bulk. Still long enough to wear open over a jacket.
- 36 × 80 — the middle ground: Wide enough to cover the shoulders properly, narrow enough to loop twice without bulk. If you cannot decide, this is the one that does the most jobs adequately rather than one job perfectly.
- 40 × 80 — the shawl: Full width, worn open across the shoulders or wrapped across the body. In the 200/2 count it is remarkably light for its size, which is the combination people find surprising: full shawl coverage that folds into a coat p…

Warping the loom
Several hundred individual threads are hand-threaded through the heddles before a single row is woven. On a solid color there is no pattern repeat to disguise a threading error, so this stage is checked twice before weaving starts.

Weaving at a consistent tension
Hand-spun yarn varies slightly along its length. The weaver compensates by feel, adjusting beat and tension row by row. A power loom holds one fixed tension and breaks fiber this fine, which is why mill cashmere is spun coarser to survive the machine.

Live edge and hand-knotted fringe
The selvedge is left as a natural live edge rather than cut and overlocked, and the fringe is knotted by hand at both ends. A perfectly sealed, machine-straight edge is the fastest way to spot a scarf cut from a larger mill-woven roll.

## Questions & Answers

**Q:** Is this a scarf or a shawl?
**A:** It depends on the width you choose. At 28 inches it behaves as a scarf — loops at the neck, sits under a collar. At 40 inches it is a shawl, worn open across the shoulders. At 36 inches it does both adequately. All three are woven at the same 80-inch length, so the difference is entirely in how much of you it covers, not in how it is made.

**Q:** What do the yarn counts mean, and which should I choose?
**A:** The count describes how fine the spun yarn is and how many strands are twisted together. 200/2 is our finest — two ultra-fine singles plied together, giving the lightest cloth for its size. 26/2 is a heavier two-ply with more body, used for structured weaves like the diamond. 28/1 is a single unplied yarn that feels softer immediately but wears less hard. Choose 200/2 for year-round wear and travel, 26/2 for cold weather and shape, 28/1 for handle against the skin.

**Q:** Why do two shawls in the same color look slightly different?
**A:** Because they were woven by hand from hand-spun yarn and dyed in small batches. Yarn thickness varies marginally along its length, and dye lots differ slightly, so no two pieces are identical in surface or exact shade. If you need pieces that match closely — for a wedding party, for instance — order them together and we will weave them from a single warp and dye them in one lot.

**Q:** What is a live edge, and is it a flaw?
**A:** A live edge is the natural selvedge formed as the weft turns at the edge of the loom. It is left intact rather than trimmed and machine-overlocked. It is not a flaw — it is evidence the piece came off a handloom rather than a cutting table. A perfectly straight sealed edge on a cashmere scarf almost always means it was cut from a larger machine-woven roll.

**Q:** Will a pale color wear out faster?
**A:** It will show soiling sooner, but not wear. Pilling and thinning come from short, coarse fiber, not from color. Because these are Grade A with a 35 to 55mm staple, they resist pilling regardless of shade. Pale pieces simply need washing more often — and cashmere improves with washing, so that is much less of a problem than it sounds.

**Q:** Can a solid shawl be monogrammed?
**A:** Yes, and solid colors are the easiest to embroider well because there is no pattern for the thread to compete with. We embroider initials, names and dates by hand, in any of over 350 hand-dyed colors. See our personalized cashmere gifts page for minimums, lead times and the full process.
